Ours is a 4JH2TE with 1000 hours. Not...

sure what the difference is between them but ours runs very smooth, always starts and has plenty of power for our 30K pounder. Terry

I have a 4JH TE

I have a 4JH TE on my 1985 Pearson 422. It runs very smoothly. Mine, and that of a friend of mine, smokes a little on start-up but the smoke disappears as it warms up. I don't know how many hours are on it. The problem I face is that I cannot run at the rated speed (3400 rpm) - the boat is doing 7+ knots at 2200 rpm, and the stern squats down in the water and covers the exhaust, and creates a real dirty stern. That's not the engines fault! I would have thought that a 1995 boat would have had the 4JH2 series engine.

My engine starts easily everytime, idles down nicely, but will only due 2500 RPM's and barely 6 knots in glass. I have a feathering prop and it may not be tuned right. I had a sudden overheating problem and started taking things apart. The mixing elbow was easy to take off and it is made heavy in cast bronze -bullet proof- a little sooty but clear enough. Seems the Hunter 35's with the 3-something engines eat up mixing elbows all the time (from comments in the archives). I hope I don't ever have to take off the complete heat exchanger because its part of the exhaust manifold but the cooling tube in it seems to just slide out once the cover plates are removed. This engine has been very dependable and easy to work on-up to now. I don't know if you're in to "doing it yourself" but these mechanics around here want $90/hour and you have to wait 10 days to get one. Good luck. Dan
