I have a 40hp Yanmar 3jh4e which I will be changing the oil. I've never done this on this engine. There are 2 (yellow cap)oil fill areas, one on top of the engine and the other off to the left side. And the dip stick is toward the bottom left. My question is which oil fill area do I fill? Both? And do I use a pump in the dip stick hole to extract the oil?
Also, are there any other areas where oil is to be changed? I know there is transmission dipstick in the rear of the engine. Is that also to be pumped out thru the dipstick hole and refilled? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

The most common way is through the dipstick for both the lube and the transmission oil.
The two filler caps are redundant - in case engine access is blocked by the boat manufacturer's design. Use either one.

Best money I ever spent was for a suction oil change setup. Not only good on boats but lawnmowers, cars, and everything else!

Just repeating what has already been said on this site. A 6.5-liter hand pump oil extractor / container works really well to remove the oil without a mess. Replace the oil filter at the same time (can be a little messy un-spinning the filter off so have a rag available) being sure to lubricate the filter gasket with fresh oil prior to spinning it on.

Put a plastic ziplock bag around the filter before spinning it off -it will still be full of oil. Once removed you can seal it for disposal at your local recycler.

A yanmar service manual for your engine, and your transmission would be a good thing to have. Mack Boring Yanmar up in Jersey can dial you in.

Correct, but do not confuse this as saying you can drain both through the same dipstick tube. They are separate sumps.

Here is how I do my 4JH2E.

Run engine up to temp and shut off. Insert pump tube in dipstick tube and drain all oil. Poke hole in top facing edge of oil filter. Place cup under filter and spin 180°. Poke another hole in the top edge. This will allow oil to nicely drain out of the filter into the cup. Use a small ziplock back to remove filter once drained.

Refill in either cap.

I can get a cup under the tranny for draining that so no need to use the pump. I also use the cup to determine how much to put back in and then top off if needed.

If you don't have the engine operations publications, here's a link to page on the Yanmar website with them:

http://www.yanmarmarine.com/index.cfm/go/Previous_models/engine_id/147/

Should also help with other maintenance schedule/check/do items for your model.
Didn't mention in the above .... It's $0 (free) for the download of the operations manual. You don't even have to register or anything. Just view the pdf. Wouldn't hurt to save it on your computer as well.
