I have a Yanmar 3JH2E in my Hunter 37c with the KBW series Marine gear. The Yanmar manual calls for ATF-A oil. Unfortunately there is not any place near me that carries marine specific supplies. I figured I could find this type of automatic transmission fluid at an auto parts store but have had no luck with anyone who has even heard of it before. Does anyone know if there is a safe replacement for ATF-A or, if not, where I might be able to order some mail order. Thanks, Morrie

Check with Yanmar Distributor

Your best bet would be to call a Yanmar distributor (Mack Boring) and they would be able to give you an accurate recommendation. I did that to find out about engine oil grades when I started having problems finding 30W Grade CD oil and they were very helpful. Check the related link. Also take a look at this link for more info: http://www.yanmarhelp.com

Check auto parts suppliers for ATF Type A

I have a Hunter 376 with the same Yanmar requirement. In the North East at least, I find ATF type A at a number of my local Auto parts stores .. I think its a less common / older type of ATF but definitely not marine specific. Also, my local stores have cross-reference books that include marine engines such as Yanmar by model and the requisite oils including yours, where they list ATF type A

I think it has been replaced by type 2

Morrie: I believe that it has been replaced by Type 2. http://www.chevron.com/prodserv/ehl/docs/atf_2.pdf I would contact a Yanmar Distributor and make sure that this is true for your product.

Thanks for the help

I'm kinda' out in the boonies here on the Hilo side of the Big Island - the auto parts stores all looked at me like I didn't know what I was talking about. I did find a Chevron station that carried the ATF type 2 and they assured me it would work. I also left an email message with the Yanmar distributor just to make sure. Thanks for all the help, Morrie
