Yanmar 3GMF22 Oil Leak

I'm starting to get quite a bit of oil seepage at the timing gear case to the block interface. Basically its the front engine cover. Oil is running down from that mating interface and then over the front of the oil pan, underneath the engine where it drips off and then runs back forward on the pan. Thank goodness for those oil absorbant pads. The actual amout of oil is very little..30 hours of running is about 3 tablespoons worth. But like everything else, I'm sure it will get worse.

I tried tightening the perimeter bolts, but it still leaks. Has anyone experienced this and did you pull the engine front off? It looks like the fuel pump, accessories and crank pully need to be removed. I would replace the front oil seal as well as the gasket. Just checking for any surprises and maybe part numbers? The service manual talks about coating both surfaces with "Three Bond 3B8-005" and install. Is that some sort of gasket adhesive?

Allan.. I haven't done it but looking at the manual, it doesn't look too bad but does have some "criticals".. The HP injection pump has to come off and the timing shims under it are critical.. Ya gonna need new banjo washers for the fuel inlet to the HP pump.. Front pulley does have to come off.. Caution on the governor linkage too.. Ya probably have a bad o-ring where the high pressure oil passage goes from block to filter or filter back to block. The gear cover gasket is 121575-01512.. The crank seal is 121450-01801

The seal and o-rings are standard parts that should be available locally.. go for Viiton if you have a choice.. Gasket goo has gotten a lot better since that manual was written.. I would use a very thin film of a high temp RTV type sealant on the gasket.

Hi Claude,

Thanks for all the info and part numbers. My service manual has the disassembly instructions and drawings but no part numbers. I'm trying to find that o-ring. Can't beat Viton for chemical resistance. Probably have to discover where it is once I get the front off. I guess we will be taking a break in sailing for a little while while I attack this one. Hopefully only take a couple of days.

Ya welcome, Allan.. Found the o-ring.. Yanmar says it is a "10-P" which may (?) be a 10 mm ..
The part number is 24311-000100.
Curious to see what ya find and hear how the job goes.. Good Luck.
