I'm looking to add a Racor fuel filter between my fuel tank and engine. I have a 1983 H34. Would be interested in advice on the type of filter as well as where to locate it. Thanks, Joe Mullee

Look at...

... http://www.racor.com (you will be redirected to the new owner company - Parker) and select "Racor". The filter most likely efficient for your use will be there. I selected the 9gpm filter and have used it for 10 years. It has an integrated hand pump/plunger on it.

Racor 230 R2

I have a 3GMF in my Pearson 34 1985. Spring 05 I put in a Racor 230 R2 (Replacement filter R20P, 30 Micron) as a pre-filter & water separator before the engine filter. Has the little pump for bleeding. So far works real well. Bowl below lets you see trouble building up & drain out water if you've got. Yanmar mechanic I spoke with recommended the 30 micron, saying the 10 is a little too fine for a pre-filter. Mounted on the engine "room" wall with a shut-off before it.

Joe...

on my 83 H34 the Racor (a 230) is mounted on the right side of the engine space's aft bulkhead, facing aft, and hanging down to access the filter and bowl. I'm using a 24S 2 mic filter in it but am considering going up to a 10 mic one as the 2 clogs easily currently. On the other hand, injectors are much more expensive so I'm still undecided. I was looking at another H34 on Yachtworld last night that Oxford Boat installed a new Yanmar in. They mounted a Racor filter on the inside of the starboard engine enclosure, near the top front. I'm now thinking of moving mine there. When I do I'll remove a "DeBug" device and install a fuel squeeze bulb to make bleeding a lot easier. I'm also going to empty the tank, remove it from the boat, install an access port (good idea, Fred), and do a complete clean-out that is evidently long overdue. Pictures of both projects will follow when complete.

with the 10 micron element. Thanks for the help. Dan, I'd be interested in the steps you plan on taking to clean out the fuel tank. How do you plan to remove it? Where will you store the fuel while you work on the tank? Thanks, Joe
