Yanmar 3GMF Fuel Pump

My 3GMF Yanmar leaks fuel and it appears to be coming from the almost inacessible fuel pump. Rather than work on the pump in place, it seems to be a better idea to remove it first and then work on it on the bench. It appears to be attached to the side of the engine block with a couple of bolts. If I remove these bolts and pull the pump, am I going to have any re-installation challenges?

Probably the hoses

The gasket is usually pretty good, but you can try tightening the four Phillips screws. Probably the problem is at the hoses. The aluminum threads may have given way, requiring either/both new hoses or pump. Getting it off to work on it at the bench sounds like the best plan.

Another option

I have a 3HM35F that was leaking from the same part. Looks almost identical to yours. They are available new for about $70-80. Buy the new one and do a basic rebuild on the old one and save it as a back-up.

no you should not have a problem

but dont crank over the motor with the pump off. the lever must be on the right side of the cam when it goes back it but its very easy to do. the new pump and spare idea is good advice too!!

could be the washers

check the copper washers. It is easy to replace them where the banjo connections are. If the washers are bent or dented you will have a leak.

Parts for "basic rebuild"?

Just replace our fuel pump last weekend. When we went looking for parts to rebuild the Yanmar fuel pump we didn't ave any luck. Spent the $85 for a new pump knowing that the problem was probably a $10 diaphram. Where can you get parts?

Replace it.

You DON'T EVEN WANT TO go where a leaky diaphragm takes you. And I posted a 'how to' in the project forum as to eliminating those pesky copper gaskets with rubber ones. Just a second, I'll be right back,,, :) Here ya go, http://www.sailboatowners.com/upload/display.tpl?folder=73257662603&fno=17

Fred Is SOOOO RIGHT!!

My diaphragm had a leak and this caused the motor to "run off" This Means the motor starts running on the oil in the crankase at about 8000-10000 rpms and the only way to stop it is to shove rags in the intake while that sucker is turning WAY TOO FAST BAD NEWS!! Change the whole pump its only about 25 bucks and is very easy to do.

Replacement Yanmar Fuel Pump Washers

Fred Ficarra told us that Isuzu banjo joint rubber washers are much better than original Yanmar parts for preventing fuel pump leaks and quoted MER in Seattle as being a good source. After talking MER, I discovered that, strangely, MER's part number is 100745 (as Fred quoted) but the correct Isuzu part number is actually 909572010. Go figure!
