Yanmar 3GM Valve Clearance Adjustment

I own a 90 35.5 with the Yanmar original and standard 3GM motor. It's been a reliable and good motor requiring only standard maintenance over the years. I note at start up/warm up, the valves really rattle and this subsides as the motor warms up to operating temp. I think this is normal, but may be more pronounced as the engine ages and an adjustment my be overdue. I have looked at the manual and it gives info on adjusting the valves; however, if someone has made this adjustment, I would like any hints and tips. I suspect that it will require a new valve cover gasket and am concerned that there may be other items I should pre-procure before I start the procedure. Any help would be appreciated.

Relax George, it's easy.

No mystery either. The gasket is a rubber O ring. Unless it's hardened from age it's reusable too. I assume that you've done the work on other engines, right? You know about base circles and all that stuff, right? Oh, don't forget to clean out the oil breather on the intake manifold. You may have a model like mine that has the small orifice that tends to plug up.

Cold knocking

Most diesels knock until the combustion chamber warms up. My Yanmar does for about the first 60 secounds, then it smooths out and runs fine.
