I have a Yanmar engine in my 1980 Hunter 30. The block is cracked and I need to get a new one. Is there anyone out there who can tell me where I can get one?

Don't think it is cost effective.
A friend just had the same delima on a H'37C. He was advised that it was not a very cost effective solution. I am not sure that those blocks are any longer available either. You may want to shop around for a used engine or maybe even a new one.

Crack Block
I don't know where it is, the mechanic that is working on it told me that it has two cracks, but I don't know where they are. He is suggesting some kind of filler which would seal it up, but everyone that I have told about this has warned me against it. They say that it will only be a temporary fix. I don't know what to do. I really need it fixed, I've missed the beautiful spring weather and I'm missing the summer.

You can place a free WTB ad on the website. I would also look on the internet for some used engines in your area. There are plenty of older Cherubini's that are being repowered because the owners want new engines, not necessarily because the engine is bad.

I will certainly let everyone know the out come of this. So far it has been a horror story. I started getting water in the oil about a year ago. The current mechanic is the fifth one who has tried to fix the problem and he re-fixed the same things that the others had fixed. He finally tested the block and found that it was cracked, but this is some $4000 later. I tend to treat mechanics as I do doctors, but somehow they don't take the same oath. When the problem is resolved I will certainly let everyone know how is was resolved.

2qm to 3ym replacement was about $15k
My friend purchased a H37C with a bad motor (cracked block). I believe that the final bill was something like $15k (new engine, shaft, motor etc). This was SF Bay area prices. I am sure that you can find a better deal. The new Yanmar was only 50% of the price. The remainder was parts and labor.

Repowering an H30
This is a verry straight foreward repower. The engine beds are 14.5" wide and will accept any of the small diesels on the market. All the 30's I''ve seen have a 1" shaft which will handle the power easily. The engine room on them is large enought to fit a small 3 cylinder engine. Average total cost should be about 8K. Most often the price increases due to customer adds, ie: PSS, new Racor, etc... The old upgrade/repower was the Yanmar 3GM30F. The GM series is no longer available except the 10. I'd recomend a Universal M3-20 for your repower with out discussing your future pplans for the boat. Pat McCartin Inland Marine Diesel Buford, Ga imd_ga@hotmail.com

Universal 5111 2 cyl 11HP
I have a Universal 5111 that came out of a Columbia 32 (underpowered) that was running well when I bought it 4 years ago to repower my hunter 27. I paid $750 for it,and would sell it for same if you come get it. You would want to get or make a new panel as the old one is rough. tomreyns@att.net Best of luck whatever you do.
