Has anybody ever cranked up a 2gmf 15hp manually ? The Yanmar manual shows a hand crank note. I found the decopmression vales but where would I get a handle bar and where would it be fixed to ? Just thought of it on a cold day when the battery was really low. Thanks for any input

Heard of it

A 31 at my Marina had a hand crank abourd although it had never been used. I am interested in it for the same reason..or just to give it a try one time.

Hand crank

I have a 1982 33 with the Yanmar 2gm. I have the hand crank and tried it. Step one release the compression levers Step two Crank like your life depended on it Step three Engage one lever Step four See Orthopidic surgeon on replacing your shoulder as the crank comes to a sudden and complete stop. .. and the motor does not start. I tried this when the starter motor blew last October. Hello Sea Tow! Dave

Yes and No

I had this engine for 17 years on my last boat. I was never able to hand start it. We tried two of us on the crank but the instant the decompression lever was dropped we could never get it over the next compression stroke. Problem was the handle was geared UP to the crankshaft and we could never turn it fast enough. i.e. Crankshaft turns faster than handle. I cut the crank handle in half and bolted in an extension piece but this was no better. One day I attended a Yanmar engine seminar given by their own agent. He had a demo engine mounted on his trailer. I asked to start it. He said no can do inside a building due to fire regs. I waited till his back was turned, gave it a swing and it fired up immediately. Ever since I have harboured doubts that his demo engine had been modified. e.g. by fitting a second head gasket to lower the compression. Anyone else ever get one to hand start one please?

2gm hand crank

Years ago I posted a photo forum article about cranking a 2gm in a Hunter 33. In searching for it just now, I found the photo forum article, but the photos are gone. Attached is a dimensioned photo of the crank I use, made from original crank parts bar stock and pipe. Original cranks are pretty easy to find as the consensus is that they are worthless. The shaft exstension is long enough to extend through the engine box, past the companionway ladder into the open floor space of the H33. A hole is bored in line with the camshaft attachment point axis which in the H33 is conveniently hidden as it exits just below a ladder step and is easily plugged when not needed. In use sufficient rpm has to be built up so that the rotating inertia brings the engine through the first compression stroke as one of the compression releases is released at maximum rotation. The reason the original cranks are universally panned is that that there is typically just not enough room inside the engine box to get the necessary speed, and maybe not even the necessary clearance for crank and knuckles. I keep this handle stored just beside the fuel tank and feel better for having it. With it, I can do without a dedicated starting battery. Even without a crank, the compression releases are important for a weak battery start as the starter may be able to spin the engine fast enough with compression releases open that closing one with the engine rotating may start the engine. This is the first thing to try with a weak battery anyway for handcranking is no fun even though possible with the right setup.

Only Superman could hand crank the 2gm

I have a 2gm and have tried several times to hand crank the motor with no success. If my life depended on hand cranking this motor I would be dead! I suggest not wasting your time finding a hand crank because it is useless.

Thanks Tom, but I'm not Superman

but I can crank a 2gm by hand. You probably could too. See my response earlier. The basic problem comes from too tight quaraters in the typical engine compartment. The cranker needs to get his whole body immediately in front of the crank. That's why I fabricated an extension that led the crank outside into an open space. There it will crank the engine and I have cranked the engine many times. Not impossible.
