2gm hand crank
Years ago I posted a photo forum article about cranking a 2gm in a Hunter 33. In searching for it just now, I found the photo forum article, but the photos are gone. Attached is a dimensioned photo of the crank I use, made from original crank parts bar stock and pipe. Original cranks are pretty easy to find as the consensus is that they are worthless. The shaft exstension is long enough to extend through the engine box, past the companionway ladder into the open floor space of the H33. A hole is bored in line with the camshaft attachment point axis which in the H33 is conveniently hidden as it exits just below a ladder step and is easily plugged when not needed. In use sufficient rpm has to be built up so that the rotating inertia brings the engine through the first compression stroke as one of the compression releases is released at maximum rotation. The reason the original cranks are universally panned is that that there is typically just not enough room inside the engine box to get the necessary speed, and maybe not even the necessary clearance for crank and knuckles. I keep this handle stored just beside the fuel tank and feel better for having it. With it, I can do without a dedicated starting battery. Even without a crank, the compression releases are important for a weak battery start as the starter may be able to spin the engine fast enough with compression releases open that closing one with the engine rotating may start the engine. This is the first thing to try with a weak battery anyway for handcranking is no fun even though possible with the right setup.
