Hi

I have a 1997 Yanmar 2GM20F engine and have had some water in fuel problems. I have had my injectors rebuilt last year and was advised to have my High pressure pump checked by Fred Holmes as it was likely damaged by the water. I am trying to remove the High pressure pump and have taken the 4 nuts off of the top and attempting to lift it out. It does not seem to want to come and feels like it is getting hung up on something. Is there a secret to removing the HP pump? Does the fuel rack have to be in a certain position? Also I have an oil leak behind the cover for the cam shaft, I can not get the cover off, the screws seem to be stuck. any suggestions?

Scott.. there is a small cover on the starboard side of the governor case just below the injection pump. Remove and you should be able to line up the linkage to enable you to remove the pump. Be very careful with the timing shims between the case and the hp pump.. Those must go back exactly as they came outand should be carefully cleaned when ya remove them. Remember the governor is controlling the rack position and not the throttle linkage which is only giving the governor a set point.

Did the water sit in the fuel system for any length of time? I literally sucked mostly water into a 3GM that I had on a previous boat to the point where the engine died. I replaced the filter, drained everything I could in the fuel system, and once fresh diesel was in it fired right up and ran fine for as long as I owned the boat. A short exposure is most likely not going to ruin anything and I am always skeptical when I see people messing with replacing injectors, pumps, etc. If you have thoroughly gone over all of the bleeding, filter and fuel possibilities then go for it. Otherwise I would be hesitant to tear into it.

I definitely agree with Mark.. yes, you can get the pump out but don't unless ya really have to.. Get all the water out .. new diesel in and bleed ..
