Thermostat may be OK. Simply removing it for a second may flush out an air bubble from that area that was keeping the thermostat out of the coolant. If so, then you should add a bleed device at the highest point on that manifold. On many engines that point is a hose on top of the manifold. This device cost about five dollars.
