I am looking to repower my Hunter 27 and I currently have two engines available. One is a 2GM (15Hp) which is a raw water engine. The other is a 2GM20F (18Hp) which is a fresh water engine. Is there a better choice between the two engines? Are there benefits to one over the other? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

get the 2GM20F. the less seawater touching the engine parts the better.

get the 2gm20f unless your area is 100% fresh water boating then the 2gm would be ok

If you can verify that the 2GM has always been in fresh water and because your sailing is in fresh water, it would be OK if available at a significant price reduction. Because it must run cooler, it will have accumulated more deposits both in the oil and in the cooling passages than a frresh water cooled engine. This is assuming similar hours and maintenance. Otherwise, the GMF is a better bet, go there if ya can.

We own a 27ft Hunter sailboat built in 1982. The 1GM Yanmar engine is in need of repairs. We have thought about replacing it with the larger Yanmar 2GM20F for more push. How had it that? How much will it cost and can you purchase a rebuilt engine?

Thanks.

Bill, I ended up purchasing a 2GM. It cost me $1,750 plus shipping. I had looked at a couple other 2GM20F engines but decided on the 2GM. It will double the hp of my existing Renault. Parts are available and I have already received great support from the folks at Torrenson and Mack Boring (ie: drawings, parts lists, phone assistance). If you want I can forward the info I have on the 2GM20F's. The sellers were asking right around $1,500 to $2,000.
I currently have removed my Renault and will be receiving my 2GM this week. I plan to go through the engine throughly before installing.
