I tried to check my oil leval in my 1981 Hunter 30 2GM transmission today and couldn't figure out if it was correct or not. My trans has a bolt to remove that has the word oil written on it and what looks like it could be a dip stick on it. The problem is that the stick has no high or low marks on it. There is an indented line all the way around maybe 1/4" from the bottom and a hole through it almost at the top. Can someone tell me how to read this? I have checked all of my manuals and they do not tell me.

Hey, Duncan.. The proper oil level is at the little inscribed line close to the bottom of the dipstick. Do not screw the plug in to check the oil.. The level should be at the mark when checked by inserting the dipstick until the plug touches then pull out ..

The oil level is hard to see at the best of times.

If you gently rough up the surface of the dip stick using some 100 grit emery, it makes it much easier to see the colourless oil level.
