Yanmar 2gm Questions

I have a Yanmar 2gm in my 1983 H30. I was wondering if anyone has cleaned their crankcase breather and if there is anything else that I should look for. In the service manual, it shows a "drilled hole for lubricating oil" and a "deflector panel". I'm assuming that I will need to make sure that the lube hole is not clogged and that everything inside is clean. Other than that, All I see is the breather pipe that goes to the intake and the gasket or Packing as they call it. Is there anything else I would need to check or clean?

Also, my instrument panel is showing it's age and is starting to fall apart where the screws hold it to the boat. I need to remove it to hook up my hour meter but I'm afraid it will fall apart I've looked for one everywhere and can't find the right one. has anyone built their own and if so, what did you use and how much of the original panel can be salvaged?

I have a 1GM and the plastic panel had cracked at the edges, where it was held by screws. I was able to purchase just the plastic piece, with the appropriate holes in place, and transfer my tach, key switch, etc. to the new piece. It was a simple job.

I purchased the new plastic panel from Boatswain's Locker in Newport Beach, CA. The cost was $28.51, part number 128170-91010. This may or may not be the right part, depending on which panel you have. But even if that's not the right one they may have the one you need.

Thanks, Ralph, I have the shop manual. it really doesn't tell you much except the parts and where they're located. There's nothing about troubleshooting or maintenance.
Alan, is this a Yanmar part or is it an aftermarket part? If it's a Yanmar part, will they sell to someone in Florida?

It is a Yanmar part. Boatswain's Locker is an authorized Yanmar dealer not far from me and so I bought it from them. I don't see why they wouldn't ship it to you. Give them a call at 949-642-6800. I'm sure you could also find it at other Yanmar dealers.

Don't get spooked about that part number, it's a simple gasket you can make out of a cardboard Coke carton with a pair of scissors in ten minutes. The oil hole is a drain back for when the upper crankcase oil fumes doesn't get sucked through for recombustion. It should be clear, but if not stick a torch tip cleaner in it, souge it out with a drop of cleaner of your choice, acetone, alcohol, diesel, whatever. I use brake parts cleaner. Most operators disregard the thing altogether, but it never hurts to check it if your motor has a lot of miles on it. You should not need to order anything.

The panel we generally rebuild completely. If it's in that bad of shape, the gauges are on their last legs anyway; buy new gauges that will fit 'the hole', and make another panel plate out of starboard. This is a nice evening project in the dry and warm.

Marine Diesel Direct (part of TOAD Marine......Where did they get that name?) in Michigan will sell/send parts for diesel engines. The site has expanded views of a variety of diesel engines. I bought a panel for our Westerbeke Ten 2 and changed out the guages after taking a picture of the wiring location and by doing one or two wires at a time. It was a fairly simple project.......just follow the color scheme and wire location after disconnecting the batteries.

I do like the idea of using Starboard in one of its very thin forms to make a panel, but without the appropriate hole saws in my tool bag I purchased the ready made panel and a new cover for it.

The best part is that everything on the panel works. I didn't know if you could buy just the panel. If I can't find one, I'll just make my own. I had it apart when I purchased the boat to replace the ignition switch. I thought that the dummy lights, buzzer, and panel were one piece. I have to admit, I didn't look at it really close. I just wanted to get the motor running.

if all you need is the black flat panel face ...yanmar has them new for about 30 dollars ..or you can contact Charley bell in Pensacola at bells marine and he has a few on the shelf that you may be able to purchase one ...i assume that you are talking about the B panel in the cock pit .....

Yanmar dealers/distributors are not allowed tp ship/sell parts out of their geographical area. The Yanmar site show the network in you area.

I looked at that site because I was curious what a 'B' panel looked like, and at that price would be hard to duplicate at yard mechanic prices. It said 'no picture available, call for a question" or something similar.

What? Why hell yes I've got a question. Number one being, what does the damn thing look like? jeeeeeeeeezus....

If you have a Yanmar manul the have the A and B panels . The B panels do not have any gauges if I remember.

lol as we all know Yanmar has a better idea when it comes to marketing ...they print 3 books for each model it seems like ...1 operators manual..2 maintenance manual...and a parts manual ...so having said that you have to have all three in order to get the full picture lol......as for the site you can look up different and all brands of engines for pricing of parts and this helps one when they are building a budget and also gives one an idea of how much to expect in cost ...one other thing they also have sales regions that they protect with the dealers life and there first born if they get caught stepping out of bounds......but they do make a good little engine..so whats a mother to do.....

thats the one i was thinking about they seem to call it the OLD STYLE b panel ........

Actually Steve, The B panel has the gauges and the A panel has no gauges. I have the B panel exactly like Alan has pictured. I have a pretty good Yanmar parts guy down in Ft Pierce, FL. (about 20 min away) He's got every part I've needed so far. If he can't get it, I'll try the place in Peneacola or just make my own. Thanks for the help everyone.
