I over heated last weekend after I ran @5 miles. The first thing I cheched was the sea strainer it was pluged with seaweeds after I cleaned it I opened the sea valve and not much water came in. I sailed back and ran the moter into the slip (no buzzer) Water is coming out the exhoust. What else should I check Thanks Craig ps the boat is a 28.5 1985

The problem is that seaweed may be stuck in the raw water intake. Remove the L-shape hose and pull it off. Also, put a wire hanger down the verticle hole to see if any more seaweed is in there. Then open up the seacock momentarily to see if water spouts up nicely in a steady stream. If not, perhaps a jellyfish got impaled on the aperture.

Dinghy Pump

We had same problem but my boat has a bronze elbow directly above the raw water inlet seacock which I did not want to disturb. When we were all clogged up I removed the flexible tube and connected our inflatable rubber dinghy pump to the open end of the elbow. Several mighty pumps and much bubbling later and the seacock was clear. Works with toilet intakes too.

Phase Two- RE-check the Impeller

So after you had an over heated condition from a blocked strainer or intake, did you later open up the sea water pump and re-check the impeller? Running dry for even a short time can deterioriate the impeller, particularly if it already has a season or two of wear and aging.
