The is the year of the unraveling sweater sleeve analogy for boat maintenance. First, I discover the stuffing box is dry rotted and cracked. It must be replaced. However to replace the stuffing box, the shaft coupling has to come off the end of the shaft. That is not going to happen. The shaft coupling is fused to the shaft after years of corrosion. So this means replacing the shaft, coupling, cutlass bearing While I am at it. After removing the cutlass I cut the shaft forward of the strut. Once done, the shaft sprang up to the bottom of the boat. What the...? After gong into the engine/transmission area, I see the engine way out of whack. Upon inspection, I found the forward port motor mount bolt sheared off. The nut holding the aft port mount in place is missing. The starboard side must be equally screwed up.

Any recommendations on motor mounts out there? First throught is stock, but ideas welcome.

I'm afraid the unraveling sweater has just disappeared into a last thread.

If the one mount has disintegrated, chances are the rest of them are not far behind. It may be time for a full replacement.

A little sticker shock on the price of these thing, and that was five years ago .

Would you be able to post a picture of one of your current motor mounts? There might be alternatives for you to choose from.

Thanks Ralph. I am coming to the same conclusion. They all must be replaced. The 2GM mounts on the front set are differently sized than the aft set. Since there doesn't seem to be an alternatives to stock mounts, I will order up the stock mounts.

I replaced all 4 motor mounts Saturday. It was a chore. All 4 were damaged. The 2 starboard mounts had the rubber separated from the steel a-frame base. The fore port mount's bolt sheared off midway from motor bracket to mount top. Stern port bracket was bent. Unbelievable. Putting the new mounts in was a lot easier that taking the old ones off.

Because the mounts were in such bad shape, I inspected the strut very closely. I am glad I did. I found about a half dozen hairline cracks on the aft end of the of the shaft tube, and a few laterally along fore and aft the set screws. Yikes! I contacted SBO today and ordered a new strut. They had one in stock. WOW!

My Marina has contact with yard that receive new motors mounted to the same mounts I needed in the crate. That saved me some money. I have not received the bill yet, but I calculate $420 for all 4.
