Might be moving to St Augustine in the not too distant future and probably/possibly taking my '82 H30 out of her freshwater home here in GA and dunking her in the salty sea...

How long will the original (I believe) 2GM (raw water cooled) last considering salt water corrosion? So far as I know and can tell, she's lived most her life in fresh.

Is it realistic to consider converting the 2GM to a 2GMF (closed cooling system with heat exchanger)... or... just keep the original motor until the rust kills it?

Malyea.. As long as you keep the zincs in OK shape, that engine does not corrode (ok the corrosion rate is very low) and will last a LONG (as in decades if there is no previous damage and no defects in the block casting) time in salt water.. but ya have to keep the zincs up..
Yes, you can convert to fresh water cooled but I doubt the cost could ever be justified..

I have a friend that has a 2gm20 in a trimaran for 23 years with no problems. You are putting it in seawater, not hydrocloric acid.

My 1981 Hunter 33 has been in the lower Chesapeake Bay for 30 years. The raw water cooled 2GM seems to be in great shape. Ed H
