Yanmar 2GM engine

Is there anyone who has done an install of a Yanmar 2GM series engine
in a vega? Would love to put in a new Beta, but cost is prohibitive.
Am looking at a remanufactured Yanmar 2GM series. By the way, there are
80 Beta dealers in the US, and 286 Yanmar dealers. There are 39 Beta
Dealers in the UK, and 65 Yanmar dealers in the UK. (Data compiled
from respective websites) A number of rebuilders of marine engines have
told me that the yanmar is a better marine engine. Guess I am sort of
opening up a can of worms here. Would love to see a poll worldwide of
what engines are in vega's, not just one person's opinion or
experience.

I have a Yanmar 2GMF in my Vega. It's an early 80's installation. Works
well, but just barely fits. Bill Bach V1071

Hi Larry,

I have the Beta 13hp, the engine fits perfectly. No adjustments what so ever.
Easy install. Great engine.

What changes did you have to make to get it to fit in? Thanks. Also,
what prop size did you use?

Hi:
I have a 1GM10 Yanmar, put it in myself, was easy, though
it reqiered some grinding to make a new engine mount.
The 2GM series is a little longer and may be a tight fit,
but you shouldn't have much of a problem (I'm sure it will
also meed a new engine mount)

Hi Larry

All I can say is that I have supplied over 120 Betas to vegas worldwide!
Never a problem, easy fit, easy install. The 13.5HP fits easily as does
the BD722 (20HP). Install is teh same for either.

Based on Kubota so the most popular base engine in the world..... Nanni
use the same base engine so similar but they dont have the heavy
flywheel.

Hope this helps. I know they are not cheap but I think tehy are a
reasonable price. Another bonmus is I can now sell to the USA and Canada
again so you get me on the end of a phone or email!

Cheers and HAppy New Year to all......

You change the oil by braile. Meaning you have to feel for the dipstick and
put the hose in it by feel as you won't be able to see it. More horsepower
than you need also means higher fuel consumption. It weighs more than a
Beta. My ignition switch fell apart after several years in the Mexican sun.
Emails to Yanmar haven't been answered. What more can I say. Oh yeah water
pump impellors are difficult to change and have been made by different
factorys. There are two different kinds. One made by Japan and later on in
the series, made in Germany. They are not interchangeable. Aslo had to tear
out the old enging bed and make up a new one.

Hi,
I bought the boat with the engine already installed. The prop is a
Campbell Sailer 3 blade with 12" diameter 10" pitch. It works well,
but I have no experience with any other kinds.

I'm in the process of removing the engine to replace mounts, install
a drain plug in the oil pan, and generally clean things up. I'm
curious to know if the engine beds have been modified ... I suspect
they have been, as the engine 'room' is painted in a slightly
different colour. I'll take a picture of the beds and post a link to
it when it's out. Maybe someone on the forum can tell me if they are
original or not.

One thing I found was the shaft tube (forward end) was worn very
thin along the bottom edge. I cut about 1" (25mm) off and now have
an acceptable thickness to work with. I suspect the shaft was
rubbing on it and wore it away, so I'll align the engine with the
stuffing box removed to make sure there's adequate shaft-to-tube
clearance.

I thought of replacing the shaft tube with a larger diameter one
until I realized the rudder shaft tube is right up against it. I
dropped that idea pretty quickly!

Hi Peter

I suspect your Vega is a Series I (Close to the chageover) so will have
a 12 degree down angle for the sterntube. Also the Series I had a
narrower stern tube.

I made two alignment cones for Beta installation. Easy to do. Made from
plastic, nylon etc. ABout 8 inches long, OD is 30mm increasing to about
45mm over the length, The ID is 25mm for the shaft.. Put one in the
inboard end and one in the outboard end of the stern-tube. This will
enable the shaft to be aligned perfectly.

The engine bearers in teh Series I is differnet to teh Series II and
III.

Hi Steve,
Yes, it is a Series I. Thanks for the tip on the alignment cones ...
good idea... I'll give it a whirl.
My next task is to find a source for reasonably priced engine mount
replacements.

Hi All

Ive fitted the 2gm into my series 1. VERY tight but it does work and
pushes the boat along very well.

If you drive her hard then she uses a fair amount of fuel, but like
anything, ease back and she is very economic, plus sits at 5kts with no
probs. 7 kts max.

I had to grind out the old beds, make new beds out of hard wood then bond
them in and laminate over A big job but as I picked the engine up for only
£250 fully re-built then I made the effort. Otherwise would have gone for
the beta by steve.

Good luck

Tim

Mine has a 14 x 9 3-blade Michigan Sailer. I think it could be slightly
smaller in pitch or diameter, but it works fine. I didn't install the engine,
so I don't know what it took to alter the beds. It now has Yanmar mounts
forward and some low profile mounts aft. Bill Bach V1071

Hi Guys

I am after an exact measurement (metric please) of the ID Dimension of
the Stern Bearing Housing that is held on by the two Allen Bolts.
Cmon, someone must know?

Cheers
