My Yanmar 1GM has a lever on the top. When I raise it, I can crank the engine easily by hand, but with it down, I can't turn it over at all. Can somebody tell me what this lever is for? thanks

for starting

Take the compression off for hand cranking or low battery when you have turning momentum up put it down.

As others have said,

the lever when in run position lets the engine operate normally. But when open, it holds the intake valve partially open to release the compression. When that's done the engine spins to high speed while cranking with the starter motor. While at high cranking speed, if the lever is suddenly closed, the engine will hopefully start. These levers were thought to be compression releases for a dead battery to allow hand cranking but Americans are too fat and out of shape so Yanmar relabeled them as 'low battery compression release levers'. That means you still need a start motor and a little juice in your battery. Any other questions?

Lever Decompresses Cylinder

The lever decompresses the cylinder. If you have a weak battery and can't crank the entire set of cylinders, toggle the lever on all but one. The engine will start (hopefully)on one cylinder, then toggle them back to the closed position.
