I just splashed the boat last weekend. As it had not been used in 4-5 years, I drained all the fuel and oil, replaced filters, etc. It started up and ran just fine. Everything was cool until I pulled the engine stop. Apparently the cable is frozen. I stopped it ok with the compression release, but would like to know if anybody knows the part number, or where I can purchase the throttle stop and cable. I did manage to get in a short sail, late Monday afternoon, and was pleasantly surprised and how well the boat sailed and how comfortable it was in the water. This was a big step up from my Sovereign 23, which, I always thought, was a pretty decent sailboat in its own right.

stop cable

Rich any yanmar dealer should be able to get you the cable but you will need the cable lenght as they come in different lengths. In the mean time you can disconnect the cable at the fuel pump and manualy shut the engine down by pulling on the fuel shut off lever(where calbe connected) or just use the compression release as you have been.

Rich.

Check my web site, photos #44-47 for some other ideas and ways to do the same job. I think it's a better way.

I like your solenoid idea. What kind did you use. Was it an AutoZone or NAPA type of part? I have to believe it would be fairly easy to hook up to the ignition key, then you can simply shut off the motor with the ignition.

Rich, I have no idea what brand.

Most diesels use a solenoid shut off though. Yanmar is one of the few with just a cheap cable to do the job. A marine generator would have them too. I rigged the wiring so the solenoid works no matter what position the ignition switch is in. Same with the shut off below. The power comes from the Yanmar, fuse protected, ignition circuit. Love it.

Rich,

Your looking for a Syncrostart solinoid. They are available to adapt to any engine. Remember you'll have to fabricate some brackets. I would not install it on the key. You'll want the engine to stop before turning off the power to the alternator. If you call the people at the following link you'll get one. Pat www.tadinc.com
