I have a Yamaha T9.9 mounted on a transom bracket on my Catalina 27. Its not the easiest thing in the world to reach the controls while its operating, and I'm considering options over the winter to make it more accessible.

Converting to the 703 or 701 remote control seems to be a surprisingly expensive option.
However, I recently noticed that Yamaha has something called a "Remote Tiller Rigging Kit" for the T9.9 that supposedly relocates the throttle, shift and stop functions, apparently for significantly less than the 701 or 703 remotes.

Does anyone have any experience with this gizmo? What does it look like, how is it set up, and, more importantly, does it work? Any other alternatives?

Forget that thing....... here's what you should get.

Go to the Yamaha dealer and get the parts to connect the cables to the motor. You will probably have to remove the tiller arm but you don't need the remote steering equipment because you can steer with the boat's rudder. There is a kill switch on the box, so you only have to open the hatch when you start up.

The cables in the picture appear longer than necessary for a Catalina 27.... however they should be looped before connecting to the motor so you can kick it up and down. If they're super long, try looping twice to use up the extra length. I purchased approrpriate length teleflex cables for my boat... about 60 bucks for the pair.

I agree with Joe! There are always some of these listed on ebay and sometimes different length cables. If you still want to be able to steer the outboard, you might want to consider a link between it and the rudder. I thought about getting one of these for my 8hp Yamaha when I first bought my boat. I later found that I was the problem and just needed to get aquainted with my outboard. :)

Thanks, all, for the quick responses.

I've received a diagram for the "Remote Tiller Rigging Kit", and it does seem to be rather "kludgy" -- basically, one unbolts the tiller arm from the outboard and straps it down somewhere else on the boat, with some extension cables.

I'm curious how the 701 or 703 works out on the Catalina 27. Anyone have pictures of the installed control? If not, where did you locate it? (I find the cockpit of my tiller-steered Cat 27 cramped as it is, and this seems like a pretty large object).

Also, my understanding is that the 701 and 703 come as either a "pull to open" or "push to open" -- anyone know which one the T9.9 requires?

Thanks!
- Matthew
