I have a Yamaha 9.9 four stroke outboard on my O'Day 272, vintage 1986. It starts and runs great as long as it's been sitting idle. After a day of sailing with the motor up and tilted, it's a booger to get started. It acts like it's flooded, but I haven't a clue why. I relieve the tank of pressure and in the tilt position the carb float chamber is below the intake. It really isn't any fun hanging over the transom playing with it in heavy weather, but once it fires and clears itself it runs like a fine machine.

I had the same problem. Service centers had no answer. Now I just shoot a short shot of starting fluid into the housing and it starts every time.

Same issue here too.
Dealer said to 'pump' the throttle several times before cranking. That seemed to help although, it still took longer than when the engine hadn't been left raised.

If it's flooding, you might
check the float level in the carb, also check the needle valve and seat to make sure it's not leaking slightly. If the float is made out of foam sometimes they become saturated with gas and allow the float level to become higher than it's supposed to be.

Try this
Disconnect the fuel line from the engine before you raise it and let it continue running until the fuel is consumed. After it dies, raise it. When you lower it again, of course you'll need to re-prime.

Thanks for the replies on the Yamaha flooding. I'm going to go after the float idea first. Since the kill switch grounds the ignition, the engine continues on briefly and that may be the moment during which the flooding occurs. I now remember a similar problem on a Chevy truck with a plastic float and Rochester Quadrajet. I changed floats every 6-9 months and finally just bent the tang on the float. I drove it for at least another ten years without a problem. I'll keep trying all your ideas until one works for me, then I'll keep looking until I can pass on the "root" problem.
