Is the Yamaha f15PLRZ outboard motor a good match for the Hunter 260 sailboat. This is the outboard model with the 20-inch shaft.

You need at least a 25" shaft or will suck air...

when the chop builds. This is largely due to the offset motor mount needed with the rudder hanging off the stern.

Longer is better...

My Nissan is in the 24" to 25" length range and I would like it even deeper. The worst situation I have experienced is when the wind is behind you pushing you into the dock/shore. The wave action can cause the prop to come out of the water at some critical times making it difficult to control your rig. I would sure try to find a longer shaft option for safety sake.

Shaft length

Very few motors of this size have 25" shafts. The 20" shafts can cavitate in larger chop. A bigger problem is backing down in chop. Hunter's motor mount is already a little suspect, so the extra leverage of a 25" shaft could be a problem under full power. This would be expecially true in a situation where the prop came out of the water then back in, creating a big surge of leverage. Jeff Peltier
