After much analysis and many recomendations, I have decided that I want to put a Yamaha 9.9 high-thrust four-stroke with a 25" shaft and 11x9.25 prop on my sailboat. Found two dealers in Kentucky. One is just plain unreliable and won't return calls or get me information. The other is a "package" dealer, and can't buy my kicker until his next "package order" in three months. Anyone have any other suggestions how I might go about buying the new motor?!? I'm starting to feel like I'm going to have to go to Japan to get it. Yamaha's website is absolutely no help in pointing me to a dealer where I may find the motor. I'm prepared to wait the three months for the "package dealer", but I'm not sure my current kicker will make it through the summer.

Why bother

With connections like that how do you get it fixed when you have problems, I'd look for something else.

Hey if they can't help you now what are they going to do for you later? Get a Honda, or Nissan if you want a Japanees motor see how fast they treat you.

simular problem

When I needed a carbarator overhaul kit for my Yamaha I had a hard time getting it localy. Checked the internet for dealers, called several and got excellent service from a dealer in Wisconsin. Part came by Fed-Ex overnight. Yamaha makes very good outboards and I am sure somebody would be happy to ship you one.

Honda water problem

Ed, There is a known problem with the Honda 4-stroke on a small dingy. It sits too low in the water and will flood from backwash. A dealer I spoke to said he tried to get Honda to publish this fact, but to no avail. A friend had the same problem with a 9.9hp Honda on an 8 or 9 ft Caribe.

keep waiting

Keep waiting the yamaha 9.9 is fantastic, I had one for 5 yrs. and not a minutes problem on my previous boat. Theses motors also have a large output alternator on them so they charge batteries well. They virtually use nothing for gas and are quiet and the electric start is great (many merc, volvo etc.dealers also carry Yamaha here in canada.

Look at Suzuki

I have a friend of mine who works for Suzuki. I am considering getting rid of my old Honda and he suggested that I buy Suzuki. After talking to a couple of dealers, I've been sold. If you take your boat to high altitudes, this is the one to have.

Get on the Phone!

The engine is superb, performance is awesome. I bought one for my Cal 27-T/2. The stock high output alternater is an often over looked benefit for cruising. Catalina has an awesome customer service commitment, but they don't seem to read email. Get them on the phone and you get fast solutions, including kicking a dealer in the butt when needed. Yamaha may be the same way because they also have a good rep for customer service.

Yamaha 9.9 High Thrust 4 Stroke

Last year I had to repower my 1973 Catalina 27 and I had no problem getting the engine. I love it. It had been sitting ll winter (I hd it winterized) abd it started yesterday no problem (even with old gas!). They idle well and are ver quiet. My 2 cents worth. As for the alternator -- I haven't had problem with it but can I isolate it to charge the house and starting batteries? Dan B

Yamaha 9.9

I have had a 15hp 4s for 4 years now with nary a problem. Quiet, powerful and very fuel-stingy. I replaced a 2s 15hp Yamaha with this one and couldn't be more pleased with my purchase. I had it shipped from Sailnet(JSI) in FL. I have had no need of a dealer or service of any kind in those 4 years. I was sold on the Yamaha when on several Gulf Coast trips I noticed most of the boats that go off-shore sported Yamahas on the transom.
