I'd be interested in seeing how the 5 pitch blade performed at 450 ft.
I still have that prop and am hoping to spend a lot of time this winter at 450 ft (Lake Havasu) so ... now maybe I have a "goal" to accomplish (its the ONLY goal I have except to spend a lot of time on the water)

Sounds like a great goal to have. I hope you're able to accomplish it.

We hope to get to Lake Havasu one of these days.

This thread has prompted me to order a non-contact tachometer to check my RPMs. I would have never thought of it until the subject was brought up here. Thanks for starting the thread.

I have the factory installed prop on my T9.9XPA. The diameter is 11.75" and pitch is 7, 3 blade prop. WOT is recommended at 5000~6000 RPM and idle 1050 +/- 50. Will be interesting to see what results I get when I check the RPM at idle and speed at 5500.

This thread got me thinking about tachometers. Could one use an old automotive tachometer on an outboard motor? Maybe it is a dumb question because I don't think there is a setting for one or two cylinders.

Yes, you could but you may have to scale the reading according to the number of cylinders you have.

That is one off the biggest advantages.
Reverse is effective at low RPM.
On my old Nissan you revved it up in reverse and slowly you felt the speed come off. ( just before you ran into the dock. )
It use too feel like driving a barge. Not anymore.

I have the Yamaha T9.9 XL High Thrust OB on my O'day 25. Great engine. Almost never needs to go above 1/2 throttle, uses less than 1/2 gal per hr and quiet. If more power is needed it is there. If I wanted to run my OB at WOT I would have bought a lot less HP but that's not what I wanted and with this size OB being so popular on this size boat, I'm sure it is not what others want either.
I put this on to record running hours. http://www.amazon.com/Hardline-Prod...1437789997&sr=8-1&keywords=hardline+hour+tach

Never even looked at RPMs. The prop spins, it pisses water and the boat goes. Enough for me.

I have the same motor on my Venture 21, barely need to crank it above idle. It was on my Ranger 26, which is a bit heavier than you O'Day, I think, b/c it ran at full throttle, or nearly so most of the time, if I was motoring, but it had plenty of thrust for maneuvering around a marina. It got something like 1 gal per hour.

My first time out, crossing the mouth of Grand Traverse Bay, and motoring b/c the wind was dead on, and my rigging fouled, I came too close to running out of fuel with only one of my 2-6gal fuel tanks full. I learned that lesson fast.
