I bought a 2005 Yamaha 6HP four stroke yesterday for $550. The reason for the lower price was it is stuck in reverse. The owner did not do mechanical work and would have to take it to a shop for repairs. He only had it for about a month and thought it did not have enough power for his boat so after the shifter malfunctioned on him bought a 9.9. I think it was a good deal as it is most likely something simple. The shifter moves back and forth just fine. The motor starts and runs great. All the shift linkage that is visible with the motor cover off looks to operate normal. I believe the lower unit must come off to fix this. Is there anything else to check for on this before I do this? Here is another clue: He stated that the guy he bought it from had just "gone through it". I asked and he said spark plugs, oil and could not remember what else. Maybe he replaced the water pump impeller and did not tighten something enough on the linkage.
