Does anyone have a sales brochure for a Yamaha 30? I am looking to move up and would like to look at any available literature. It would be great if anyone had survey advice or comments on the boat. I assume the 30 is the bigger, better sister.

I am really happy with the quality of my Yamaha 25 and her sailing characteristics. I have assembled quite a gallery of pictures at:

I am hoping to find a good 30 this summer. Of course, I'll have to sell my 25 first...

Hi Richard,
I'm assuming that you've checked out Yamahasailboats.org ? Bob hasn't updated anything there in years (I sent a copy of the Y30 manual that never got posted) but there's a lot of info about the various boats.
You've got the 25, so no need to describe the quality of build & innovative design. It was originally looking at a Y25 that got me started looking at the Yamaha line.

As far as the Y30 goes, I love it.
- It is a lot bigger boat than my former Ranger 28. I was originally looking for a 33, but in the end the 30 was probably a better choice for me.
- The large beam may be of a concern finding moorage.
- I usually single hand and find that a lot of time I'll have to reef 'cuz I just don't have the weight to counteract all the sail area.
- You pretty much have to keep the water tank full (in the stern) to counteract the weight of the engine & fuel tank up front. (I think I may have a larger aftermarket fuel tank)
- I found I had to upgrade the anchor to 35# Lewmar as the fairly high windage (freeboard, beam, tall mast etc) made me break free a couple of times.

Survey notes?
- Check the drive line. If it's the bow mounted engine, that's a long shaft. I found my front steady bearing (pillow block) was shot, the packing gland had been replaced with a dripless seal which meant a long unsupported shaft, so the vibrations could get pretty severe. An expensive though ultimately necessary proposition.
- The darkened plexiglass ports seem to be a fairly common source of leakage. My next major project!
- Folding prop? My Martec is a pain for motoring, want to upgrade to a Flexofold!

Ok, there's some thoughts.

cheers,
Craig
