I have a Yamaha 25 with a Yanmar YSB 8. The exhaust elbow cracked and when replacing it, noticed another part that is leaking real badly. I can not identify the part in the manual, but it is the big cylindrical "can" that the outward portion of the exhaust elbow connects to. It is the last thing in the engine compartment before heading through the exhaust hose and out the stern. I think it is a muffler, but can not find details anywhere.

Is this a Yanmar or Yamaha part? Can I just bypass this and connect the exhaust elbow to an exhaust hose piece and straight out the boat?

Any help would be appreciated!

After a little more research, it appears this is an old style waterlock muffler. Have any Yamaha owners out there replaced this with a Vetus Waterlock Muffler and can recommend a model or me to use?

the mixing elbow usually comes with the engine , beyond that point , you can connect to the muffler and even directly to the exhaust pipe in the hull.

If you change things with your exhaust : be careful that you understand why it is run like it is, as a change could cost you your motor..Dale

I repaired mine about 5 years ago with DURAGLAS fiberglass filler and still going OK
Clean and dry well the part and build up(aprox 1 mm) the cracks with that filler and let it cure.In that area of the exaust system there is no pressure and the water is already cool.

My local-made steel muffler in my Y25 had given me quite some headache. It's been leaking since day 1 I got the boat. The leaks were at the welding, and the previous owner simply moulded a layer of fiberglass from the outside trying to stop it. Obviously it didn't work at all.

So I got it re-welded at the leaks, but it started leaking again at other welding area after 2 weeks. Then I got all the welding re-welded again, but still in vain.

Finally, I poured tar oil(paint?) into it and let the exccess flow out. Then let it dry for a week, so as to seal the leak from inside. Now it's put in test, and I will see how it works.
