Plan to close on the purchase of an O'day 25 this week. the outboard is a 10hp w/elec start, electronic choke and remote controls.
To start the motor the owner took the cowling off so he could play with the throttle to keep it idling higher until the motor warmed up. He said the remote throttle did not work in neutral.

He had to crank the motor for about 3 10 second intervals before it started.

Is this due to the electronic choke? Can a manual choke be installed? Is there something else I should look at? Is this a reliable motor?

I have played with one of these a bit, but one without remote controls.. We found the trick was to pump the primer bulb fully.. Then go into gear and pump the throttle 3-4 times to full and back to idle each time. Then go back to neutral and hit start.. The accelerator pump in the carb will prime the engine and it should start pretty quickly.. There usually are some adjustments that can be made to the remote control to allow you to raise the idle speed a bit when in neutral ..

You might check the condition of the remote cables... they do get worn and will affect throttle performance. Its an easy DIY fix.

I think it's well worth the money to have a reliable Yamaha OB mechanic give you a diagnostic report....and see if he will sell you a tech manual. There may be a simple fix to the choke issue.

If it's like my Tohatsu, the "electric" choke is a simple magnetic trigger.... for an otherwise manual choke. The choke disengages once the motor starts..... so you must leave the fast idle lever set so the motor will run without the choke until it's warmed up... then it will run well at normal idle speed.

Regarding your purchase........ VERY COOL... you didn't mess around.. 25 feet!!! what luxury. I'm very excited for you, Ward. Another great bonus is that Oday sailboats has a very strong owner group... lots of support for solving problems, making reparirs and upgrades, sail handling and rigging issues.... etc. Again, congratulations.

Claude, I wrote down that sequence. That starting squence and Joe's explanation of the choke, sounds like the issue. I will use that info on Wed, when I get the boat hulled out to inspect the bottom. OB mech is checking the motor too.

Joe,
Thanks. I focused on O'Day boats in part due to the owner group support.
Back in the spring the Admiral was not sure about sailing. Now she is as excited as I am so we think this will be a good investment.
Thanks for your help
Ward
