Helo all, So it's starting to get cold (29 degress this morning) and it's time to start winterizing the boat. I have a Hunter H26 with a Yahamma 8H. Since this is the first winter that I've owned the boat. I spent a lot time reading the owners manual on how to protect the motor for storage. The instructions seemed very clear. I got the motor started and warmed up, sprayed the fogging oil into the intake, killed the motor and filled the cylinders with fogging oil and turned the motor over a couple times to work it in. Then my problems started when I went to change the lower unit lub. I drained out the lube and it looks good. No milky appearance. Here's the problem I live about 2 hours from any good size lake and marina. So I went to my hunting and fishing store which cares a good supply of boating items. The problem is that they don't seem to carry a pump to fit the yahamma motor. So I put the drain plug back in the bottom and using the pointed bottle tried to fill the lower from the top fill plug. Is this an issue or do I need to pull out that lube and find the right pump. Thanks Jason

lower unit lube

Try taking out both the upper and lower plugs and squeeze in the oil through the lower hole. Put the top plug in before you take the nozzle out of the lower hole. Lastly put the lower plug in. Jim

If you tip the engine up you'll find it much easier to fill the lower unit. I would also suggest that you remove the entire lower unit, remove the top cover of the water pump, clean and lubricate the pump housing. As you reassemble the motor, apply anti seize grease to the threads of every bolt you remove. That way you will never have a problem with the next teardown. I will also suggest that you should run the carb out of fuel by shutting off the fuel valve and letting the engine run until the engine stalls. This way the old fuel will not remain in the carb all winter where it can do its dirty work. Then remove the fuel tank and empty it. Rince it out with alcohol.

Fill from lower hole

Jim's right - fill the lower unit from the lower hole (engine vertical).

Pump

Ok, I haven't been able to find a pump that will fit the lower hole. I have to see if I can get one from west marine. Jason

If you have a Walmart in the area, they carry generic pumps that will fit your engine...and be much cheaper than anything West Marine carries. Follow Jim's instructions, they worked on my 8HP Yamaha.
