Yacht Trucker Recommendations

I'm researching trucking companies to haul BlueJacket (a 40' Freedom) from Milwaukee, WI to the Sea of Cortez, Mexico. Does anyone have any recommendations for companies to do business with or who not to business with?

I used the USHIP website for a move of about 500 miles, if you're not familiar with it, the companies bid on the trip and you pick based on price and rating. Might not be your first pick being an international haul though, my 2 cents

Thanks, I've already entered my info there, but I have no idea who will quote. I'm really hoping for good recommendations as well as suggestion as who NOT to use.

Geoff, I believe the Carver manufacturer is up there somewhere. We had lots of boats shipped from there to Texas and the carriers were pretty good. You might touch base with them and see if they can give you a recommendation. Not everyone will be able to go into Mexico. Chuck

It may be worth it to get a quote of Milwaukee, WI to San Diego CA in addtion to your overland quote. If you do not want to sail it from San Diego, I bet you could find a skipper that may cost less than having it hauled over land through Mexico.

Edit to add, I bought a dinghy from a sailor that sails people's boats from Florida to Hawaii and then flies back. If you wanted him to quote you from Florida to the Sea of Cortez, let me know. I still have his name and number in my contacts.

Dave/Recess,

It's actually shorter to go from Milwaukee to Guaymas, Mexico than it is to go to San Diego. From what I've been told, the road system (15D) from Tuscon, AZ to Guaymas is actually a pretty good road.

I personally have no desire to sail, in Oct/Nov, for 900 miles from San Diego and then back up the Sea of Cortez to leave the boat on the hard again for about 5 months.

I just googled it on maps. That really is not that far from Tucson. I have these romantic ideas of some summer going to the Sea of Cortez. I would love to know how good the area is to drive through while towing a 25. I have friends that live in Texas that say the roads have become bad due to law enforcement in that area, but Mexico is a big place with a lot of differences in law enforcement.

I would love to know how that trip is from Tucson to Guaymas Mexico?

Be aware that many truckers may not have insurance for the Mexican section of the trip. Make sure that your carrier does.

Where in Mx. are you planning on keeping the boat. San Carlos is supposed to be a good, secure location. Right now going to Mx via car is not a good idea.

I used Nick and Mike Evans, owners of EMI Marine Transport out of Dale Indiana. They were extremely professional and were really easy to work with. I would recommend them in a heartbeat. I'm not sure if they haul to Mexico, but it would be worth asking. You can reach them at 8124490593 or check their website at www.emimarinetransport.com They haul boats from the Great Lakes all over the US. They moved my boat from Oconto, WI to Ft Pierce, FL for a really reasonable price.
You might want to look up any boat builders in the area where you are taking your boat to. They might have a boat being shipped to the Great Lakes and need a return trip.
