I need to replace the throttle and shift cables on my '86 H34 with a Yacht Specialties pedestal. Has anyone been successful in locating these cables or has anyone adapted series 33 cables from Edson? Edson tech support says theirs can be used but it will take some modifications of the linkage with the lever arms. Mine are 20 year old originals and stiff as a board. I don't trust them anymore. I don't believe lubing them is the answer for a long term fix even if you can do that properly. Bob

Hi Bob, when it came time to replace our cables...

I took the old ones to WM and matched the replacements with Teleflex brand cables. They make a wide variety of control cables for Hunter boats at reasonable prices. Our boats were built with Edson pedestal systems. Terry

Yep, They're standard stuff.

In stock through out the civilized world. Just pull out the old ones and match them up for length. Now I'm going to save you a TON of frustration and time. Are you ready? To remove the shift cable from the pedestal DROP THE SHEAVE ASSEMBLY under the pedestal. First you loosen the cables at the quadrant then undo the four bolts holding the turning pulley assembly and let it hang down. Wires and cables will still be routed through it. Then go back to the cockpit and remove the stuff you can reach under the compass. Then unscrew that pan-head screw at the back of the pedestal just below the wheels' shaft. You can't miss it. Take it out. You might have someone below to catch the bracket that will fall out of the pedestal. NOW YOU HAVE TO BE LUCKY. The bracket is aluminum. You need it to be in one piece because you have to have it. Get down on your knees and pray or do a voodoo chant, whatever. OK. The reason you dropped the sheave assembly is so you can re-install the shift cable clamp. Hold the bracket in place against the new cable and insert it into the pedestal from below. Have someone install the pan head machine screw from above. Tell them to push the screw all the way in and hold it with a screwdriver and to start turning when you say so. When the bracket is on the tip of the screw have your helper start turning. You'll feel the bracket being captured by the screw. DON'T LET GO YET. The cable needs to be held in place until the bolt is nearly snug or it will fall out. This took way longer to write than to DO. You'll see.
