Some YC's - you have to earn it!

I used to belong to a YC that would give points for each committee that you participated in. After you have accumulated so many points, then you went on to a wait list to get either a slip (long wait) or a mooring (not too long a wait). Then you had to maintain your activity in the club to keep your "gift". This was not an ideal situation, but it kept the committee people active.

If you have ever been to Ninette MB....

you would understand!! ( I was born in Russell Manitoba, Roger- can,t imagine how little a mooring costs there- course the slough ( Manitoban for a VERY small pond) would restrict one to a very small boat. Lots of wind tho

William, come on up to Toronto

My club here in Toronto charged $1100 this year. That's for a finger dock with power and water, haulout and launch, and winter storage. Its the same price for all boats regardless if you have a 22 or 42 footer. Kevin

slough

Nice to see another Manitoban, even though you are an ex, Richard. The 'slough' is 9 miles long and 1 1/2 miles wide and about 12-17 feet deep. It is actually an ancient riverbed from a glacial river, so technically not a slough. (Oh, I am SO offended ;) )The deepest draft launchable is 5 feet. No electricity on the dock, no water, except what is available at the clubhouse, but yes it is $200 annual. (The slip fee is $200 but there is an additional $60 for social membership.) The largest boat is a 27 footer, and there are about 3 dozen boats here, mostly sailboats, and only half a dozen are open daysailers. The others are all racer/cruiser designs. Read it and weep folks!

Hey - Kevin B. - that's great!

That is a fantastic price. Just got my April 1 to Oct. 30 2006 billing in Oakville and it's a hair over $1000 (26 footer). No finger dock, no electricity. Add to that another $500 for haulout, launch and winter storage at the yacht club. Our club membership fees are $500/year, plus $400 work-party (you can work this off), plus $300 house charges. Getting pretty expensive!!! Where are you located? Cheers,

I'm glad I joined.....

We belong to a 'workingman's yacht club. Our dues are reasonable..considering local marinas. We have a nice facility - grounds, clubhouse with food service, sail racing program. We're required to put in 10 work hours or $35/hour each year. We've belonged for 8yrs now, and wouldn't consider leaving. Most of our members enjoy just being here way too much to put up with 'stuffed shirts' or 'snobs'.

Toronto is great

Toronto is great Kevin, when I finish my work here I'd love to get a slip there for a year or so. I was there this year for blue jays opening day against the red sox, and spent of my time/money at the brass rail on yonge street. Made my pilgrimage to Hockey hall of fame.

jimq26, I'm at Bluffers Park

The Bluffers Park YC is in Scarborough which makes it the wrong side of town for you, unless you are prepared to drive. In my humble opionion I think we have the second most attractive setting in the Toronto area (the clubs on Toronto Island are probably the best, but they have to put up with the airport noise and music from the tour boats and Docks nightclub, not to mention requiring a ferry crossing to get to their boats). We are a "self help" club and members have to do 20 hrs. work which is how the costs are kept low. Sail over this summer for a visit. Kevin

Great club Kevin-

Yes, I have heard nothing but good things about Bluffers Park YC. We get a few of you up to BHYC every year on reciprocal privelege and always enjoy their company. BHYC is also a self-help club, but our moorings are with the town. You know politicians - they jack everything up whenever they get a chance. I guess since I can walk to the boat from my house I should consider myself lucky. Merry Christmas to all!
