In my marine head, I have a Y valve that connects the toilet to either the holding tank or to outside discharge. It is very hard to move the valve by hand. I have used a wrench handle (with the hole) to move the valve. Would this be considered semi-normal? I'm thinking not. Sould I replace the valve as I'm sure it is OME on my '85 Lance 27PS? Or is there a means of lubricating this valve? If it is not faulty in anyway, no need to replace it, correct? Thanks.

Balky Y-Valve

Yes, those early Y-valves would get to be a pain. I never had any success with lubing them, but you should try it if you can get access by removing a hose. I would try Super Lube. If that does not work, just manhandle the thing until it breaks and then replace it. The newer ones seem to hold up much better. BTW, my dad had a 29 PS for twenty years. Just sold it last year. His Y-Valve was always stiff too.

Your head...

should go to tank 1st and then y-out to overboard or deck pumpout. From Peggie's advice, the "Y" or diverter valve from Whale is the best on the market, no leaks and 5 year warranty.

I disagree, honeyman...

Whether to send everything to tank depends on where you sail. If you're someplace like the Chesapeake Bay or SF Bay--miles from open ocean--then yes, it's prob'ly best to send everything to the tank. But if you mostly sail offshore, it's a lot easier to flush directly overboard than it is to have a dump the tank every time it gets full. Why store waste aboard if you don't have to? Brian, if your y-valve is balky, replace it. Don't wait till the handle breaks in the middle of a weekend. And yes...I strongly recommend Whale.
