I thought I'd asked about this particular anchor before, but I couldn't find anything in the archives on it. I'm in the market for a new anchor and am intrigued by the XYZ Exteme anchor. Has anybody had any experience with it or know much about it (other than the fact that it comes with a 6 month return-if-not-satisfied policy)?

Here you go John

You did ask before and I found the thread.

It's funny, after re-reading the last thread, that every time someone gives a good review of an XYZ they write very similarly to Drago, the inventor of the XYZ.. Just thinking out loud??

The day Has Finally Come

for me to disagree with you, Maine Sail. Thanks for finding the old post- I re-read it again (the first time, it was too boring for some reason), and actually enjoyed it this time. Reading Drago's post gave me the impression he's european; he actually writes with an accent. "Sleeps like a baby","For the buck" and "Looks cool" don't sound like him. And neither does John, for that matter, especially since he's posted a couple of hundred times!

I know you do your homework before you share your opinion, which is why I, personally, put alot of stock in what you say. That's why your negativity toward the xyz puzzles me. It seems logical to me that no anchor can be best in all conditions, as anchors like the xyz seem to be designed to "outdig" traditional anchors with it's radical fluke design. It makes sense that it would be much less effective on hard surfaces (your rope on a rock?).

I don't use an xyz, don't recall ever seeing one in use, but I would certainly consider one for one reason- satisfaction guaranteed or money back in 6 months!!

Let me extend an olive branch- Drago: if your product is as good as you say, particularly with regard to wind shifting and quick resetting (sounds perfect for Maine's conditions), offer one to Maine Sail for a 6 month test. If you can make a believer out of him, what a marketting ploy! And if he doesn't give it a thumb's up, you can certainly claim prior bias, so no harm done!

Maine Sail- would you be willing?

Where/how?

Maine Sail:

I did a search on this forum using "xyz anchor" and checked both "message" and "title" but that previous thread didn't come up. How did you find it?
(Thanks, by the way.)

You're probably right..

TimCup! It just amused me that most of the folks touting the XYZ are un-registered and write in some form of foreign interpretation of the english language.

I don't doubt that the XYZ will work, and probably work better than many of the old school anchors. I have never owned one, and made that clear. All I can go on are the few tests that are out there which don't seem to show much consistency. From the looks of the design I would think it may be a great soft bottom anchor.

A 6 month money back guarantee is great and a good gesture from a manufacturer of their confidence in the product.

My post was made sort of tongue in cheek but I forgot the "winkie" which I've now added. Sorry for the confusion.

problem with trying

The problem with giving the XYZ a try is that around here (SF Bay) we almost exclusively have mud and clay - more soft bottoms. I have no plans to do any real long distance sailing in the next six months, so I wouldn't be able to test the XYZ on a harder bottom. So I've decided to go with the Manson. I read one article on this anchor (I think written by the originator of the Rocna) that really criticized it, and the criticisms sounded legitimate. But from what others report, it works pretty well and the price difference between the Manson and the Rocna is so great that I'm going to give it a try. I'm getting it from Waste Marine so if I'm not satisfied, I can take it back.
