When I installed my S1 on my boat I was so mad at Raymarine. I had to send my computer to them according to tech support. I got the computer back and the unit still didn't work. I called Tech support back and they advised me that I needed to switch two wires. I did this and it worked. The tech support person on the phone laughed at what the first tech told me and told me that I had bad advice and laughed. These tech support people spoke broken English and they were hard to understand at time.
Now that the unit is working I have put close to 1000 hours on it in the time I have had it. I have been happy with it but I still feel there is room for improvement because it requires some tinkering with settings, which is a pain to do.
I would like to see an integrated system in the future that combines all the instruments on one display (wind, water speed, depth, radar, weather, GPS, and autohelm), that is touch screen to control, and has a repeater at the nav station. It would also hook the VHF radio through the system so it could share GPS location in case of an emergency. Then you could have the system with a blue tooth setup so you could use your Iphone or Droid as a remote.
Add a smarter computer to this so that it learns your boat and the conditions based on input so you don't have to tinker with the settings.
Still, no matter what you add to the computer system and how good it is, it will never replace the need to know the old systems of navigation, steering, and charting because computer systems will always have the chance to fail!
