Wrong way sink

I have noticed a problem on starboard tack that the sink in the head overflows with sea water . is there a one way valve to stop this or just close the through hull when sailing? I don't consider the angle of heel to excessive 15 to 20 degrees. Any of the other 376/380 owners with the same problem? Andy Hansom 380 Vanishing Point

Close the thru-hull.

You've just illustrated why ALL thru-hulls should always be kept closed except when whatever they're connected to is actually in use. Unfortunately, that's not always the easiest thing to do, because seacocks definitely aren't "decor" items, and today's typical boat buyer thinks they detract from a boat's sleek "floating condo" appeal...so despite the fact that ABYC standards (which are totally voluntary) call for all seacocks to be readily accessible, boat builders hide 'em under settees and other places that make it very inconvenient to get to 'em. So they stay open all the time...because who's take everything stored in the settee out--or worse yet, remove the drawers under a berth or go out in the cockpit when it's raining and take everything out of a cockpit lazarette--and then put it all back, to open and close a seacock every time you need to wash your hands or use the head? There is a work-around: if you can't easily get to the seacock each time you use whatever is connected to it, install a shut-off valve that IS readily accessible...in sink drains, head intake lines, and head discharge lines if they go overboard), and keep those closed except when actually in use.

Simple solution

Peggie is correct about closing the thru-hull valves, but how many people really do that? My H33 does the same thing. I have a metal sink-stopper that came with the boat when I bought it three years ago. It is a pretty good fit, and when inserted in the drain, prevents water from splashing up through the drain hose when heeled over. Ken Palmer, S/V Liberty

Sinks

Andy, I also have a 380 and only rarely have I had water back up into the sink when I forgot to close the seacock. Usually this happens only as the boat is working through signififcant waves. But Peggie's response is spot on, close the seacock's, especially as they are easily accessible on our 380's. Also don't forget to close the one the sink in the v-berth. I hope this helps. Your in luck.

Andy: Your in luck. I just got a new Edson catalog. They have anti-surge valves for hose sizes upto 1 1/2" ID. (#905-150) $32.00. But, you should keep them seacocks closed. These do no good when the hose ruptures at the seacock.
