Can anyone please help me with some information. I'm writing a story just for fun but I want to be rather accurate with my details. I want to include an old wooden boat anywhere from 1880's to the 1930's. It has to be approx. 60 feet in length and be a racer/cruiser, any suggestions appreciated. Particularly interested in a vessel that can go blue watering and am looking at the Herreshoffs, S&S's etc. Your input is appreciated.

Try reading Joshua Slocum's

"Around the world alone". He restores a 30'+ boat and describes this process. He then sails around the world. A quick read. A not so quick read is the Patrick O'Brian Aubrey/Maturin books which go into a lot of detail that was researched from the Royal Naval Archives. This series is set in a deeper historical context than you are looking for though. Think tall ships and the Battle of Trafalgar etc. There are a ton of books you could use for reference material. There is a Herreshoff website and museum in Newport RI I think. S&S has a website too. Use google to find these as I am too lazy. Then there is "Wooden Boat" magazine. Good luck.

How about Vito Dumas, Argentinian, who set many records, sure it was 1942, but his boat dates from the 30's. http://doi.contentdirections.com/mr/mgh.jsp?doi=10.1036/0071376119

Wooden Boat

I need an old wooden boat that I can use in a story that would have a mid-section that I could place a heavy item about the size of a small car. The boat in the story is approx. 58-65' long with a 15' beam and would have possibly been a former racing boat turned cruiser, does anyone know of a Herreshoff/Hinckley/S&S etc. that would fit that bill? Any help appreciated.

You might try

Donald Street's "Iolaire," which is for sale. See link.

Slocum

Re: Slocum, launched my restored boat not 100 yards from where Joshua rebuilt his "Spray" which was an old fishing sailboat of about 100 years in age before Slocum rebuilt it.
