I recently bought a used WP5000 from ebay and am now installing it in my 79 H33. Questions: 1. Does the flux gate compass really have to be 39" away from the ship's compass? 2. How critical is the alignment between the motor and the wheel pully? 3. Does the attached photo of the mounting bracket look like yours? The reason I am asking about the mounting bracket is that it seems somewhat flimsy and the inside surfaces on which the motor mount impinge are convex inward, making the sides of the bracket splay outward when the belt tightening lever is rotated. 4. How tight does the belt have to be? when tension is increased, the whole assembly wants to pull out of alignment. Is there a compound to reduce slipping on the wheel pully so that such a lot of tension is not necessary? Any other suggestions about making the wp5000 dependable in operation would be appreciated.

Terry: Contact Simrad for the answer to your questions. These guys are very helpful and I'm sure that they will be happy to assist you. These units are bullet proof from what I have heard. I know a few sailors that have had these units for years. A friend of mine just purchased a new unit at Pacific SailExpo for about $430 (no frt and no tax).
