Just got my Navico WP300CX autohenlm and will be installing it soon on my 1985 H31 Merriam wheel. Any hints or things to watch for before I start the job? Appreciate any advice.

About as easy as it gets

I just installed one on my H37C, and it was really easy. The only remotely tricky part was adjusting the clamps while ensuring that the unit is centered around the middle of the wheel hub. One note however : The rubber sleeves around the clamps do not fit through the slots, so they have to be cut off several inches (depending on the diameter of your pedestal - mine was a small diameter pedestal). Good luck.

Shims

Rafi: There are a couple of shims that need to be placed inside the mounting bracket. Be sure to put those in there. It did not look like they were required but when the bracket is tightened it will flex and you will not be able to keep the cover on. I little tricky running the wire down the pedestal but not too bad, just have a wire fish to pull the power cord down. We also had to set the gain to slow down the wheel action too. Made two 3 hour trips this month, what a pleasure!

Satisfied w/WP300CX?

Sorry for jumping past the installation question...I posted a question previously wondering if anyone had experience w/the WP300CX and didn't get a reply. I like the idea that the unit is self contained and a separate panel does not have to be installed. (hate to think about sawing through the boat) So you all think the unit is a good purchase? Rafi - let me know what you think when you get yours up and running. email me at miiller.dk@mindspring.com

Doug, you can dig it.

Doug: I have only had mine installed for about a month. Have motored with it for about 6 hours and sailed for about 30 mins. in lite air (Bud Lite as a matter of fact). It has worked well. On the H'31 you can sit on the port side of the boat and tack or adjust the direction of the boat without any remote. Even if you are up close to the cabin it is within easy reach. Easy installation is definitely a plus. There are several other owners out there that have them installed and only one indicated some type of compass problem. This thread should get some positive & negative feedback in the next few days.

Cost/Feature Comparison

Is the Navico WP300CX comparable with the Raytheon Autohelm ST4000+? If features are the same, what's the price difference? (West Marine shows exact same price.) What made you decide on the Navico?

Got mine for.....

Got mine from Sailnet aka JSI for $825 including shipping. I think that the units are comparable. Each unit probably has a feature or two that the other does not.

Now Simrad WP30.....

I think. Navico was purchased by Simrad some time ago. I received my West Marine 2000 catalog and noticed that the Simrad WP30 looked an awful lot like a WP300CX. The text reads the same. To answer Jay's question, the Raytheon selection chart put my H37C into a 5000+. It's more than twice the money and a difficult installation(attaches below deck to the rudder post). The 4000+ is rated at 16500 displ. while the "WP30" is rated at 19000 displ. I wrote to Pete(the first post) about the installation of his WP300CX, sounds real simple. The price of the WP30 at JSI and Defender is about the same, $939.

Why WP300CX?

I have done some extensive internet reserch before buying the unit and could hardly find any bad comments about the WP300CX. The ease of installation was key to me, as I wanted to install it myself, in order to become more familiar with the boat and save money. One disadvantage of WP300CX is that it does not have a course display. I personally believe I can do without it. If you must have one, Navico sell a remote control unit with a display as an optional accessory (CP600 Corus Programmer).
