WP30 install and H29.5

A few weeks ago I posted a query for information from anyone who might have installed a WP30 autopilot on a H29.5. I only got one specific response from someone who indicated that they were having problems figuring it out and had given up - at least temporarily. When I recieved the unit, I was surprised to see that it could only be installed on a cylindrical style pedestal. The install literature did not even describe any method of installing on a bulkhead type of installation. Since almost all Hunters made in the last 7 years or so have this type of fiberglass pedestal enclosures instead of cylindrical pedestals, I was very surprised that no one had mentioned this problem before - especially since there has been so much traffic about the Simrad products over the last two years. In any event, I could not figure out how to mount it on the H29.5. Someone on the internet indicated that there is a "bulkhead kit" available for apprx. $175. I did not locate anyone selling such a product. Even so, I could not figure out how to get enough clearance between the wheel and the pedestal without cutting away a big section of the fiberglass pedestal. It also conflicted with the way my VHF radio was installed and my throttle/shifter installation too. I gave up and returned the unit to Sailnet who took it back at full price with no questions! Now I just need to fugure out how to upgrade my Autohelm to improve it for the future since it seems I have no other real choice. Please let me know if anyone has come up with some other solution. Bill, I installed a Raymarine St4000+ on my 29.5.

If you decide to upgrade to that model you could e-mail me at mulf@aol.com and I will be happy to go into details on that install (but not til monday cause i'm headed for the boat in an hour or so).

WPFK1 Flat Mount Kit for WP30

I have the information from Simrad on this kit, dimensions, etc. I have not quite figured out whether there is room or not to install on the 29.5. Maybe one of you can figure it out and let me know. Did get information from Edson Marine that they do not have a wheel extender. If more room needed, it would mean a custom shaft for about $ 200. The flat mount kit is $ 150 from a dealer. Look me up in the owner's directory if you would like a copy of this information. Certainly some Hunter owner has installed this autopilot on a flat pedestal. I don't object to moving the VHF. It looks great without an exposed belt and figuring where to put the reflux compass on the Autohelm 4000. Joan
