We decided to take our PY23 out for a short sail last evening. I just had the centerboard fixed so we wanted to see what she would do. We were sailing along on a beautiful 15kt brisk beam reach. We were just about at the turn around time when we saw what looked like a floating raft. We were about 2 miles offshore so decided to investigate and as we got closer we realized the floating raft was waving their arms at us. Turns out it was 3 teenage boys in a paddle boat - about 2 miles offshore - IN THE OCEAN! They had gone out to fish and got caught up in the offshore wind and current here in the Chesapeake Bay. Their little boat was full of water and they were exhausted from paddling. We tried every which way to tow that thing, but it kept swamping and our little 8hp motor just couldn't make any headway with the current. What saved the day, was a plastic laundry detergent bottle bailer I had made. I intended to have it onboard as a back up to our bilge pump "just in case". I never thought I'd need it for someone else's boat. One of the boys got back into the boat and bailed the water out, sat on the stern, while we tied it up just a few feet astern of us. We were able to make slow but steady headway that way. We dropped them off about 10 feet from shore, made sure they made it to safety and headed home, by now it was a 20+ kt wind. So it was quite the adventure. As a mom and grandma, all I could think about all night long was the danger they were in, and possible catastrophe. It was cloudy, cool and sunset was just an hour away when we found them. There was no else around and they had no cell, whistle, horn, food or water. What an awful night it would have been for them!

Thank you...

I am sure they also thanked you, but I too thank you for being there and helping them. You are a true angel on the water.

Commendable job!

How lucky you were in the right spot at the right time and decided to investigate. Those boys could very well owe you their lives. I hope you gave them the lecture about being better prepared. I'm sure it gave you a tremendous lift to be able to help like that. An extra piece of pie for you tonight,

What they did RIGHT....

was have their life vests on. Thank God for that. I forgot to mention that they had been out since noon and it was approaching 7PM when we found them.

Very Lucky for Them

They were so lucky you came by at the right time or we would be listening to some very bad news on the radio and TV. It's a shame these kids don't think, were they wearing any PFD's . Nick

TCBRO -

my husband is a retired US Navy Master Chief and I'm a retired Chief. We praised them for what they did right - used PFDs, use a double arm slow long wave motion. THEN they got the lecture about being in the wrong place on the wrong boat! They told us that other boats had passed earlier and just waved back not realizing they were in distress.

Happy ending

Great to hear it turned out well. While moving our new boat we came upon a pilot house off shore that had been separated from the rest of the boat by what appeared to have been a violent explosion. Other debris was floating around and inside it including life jackets. Very eerie to come across something like that and wonder what had happened. We reported it to the CG and they had us stick around for about 30 minutes and then told us to be on our way. Evidently they knew about the accident.

It is the out of the ordinary that makes things memorable.

That did not sound like your average daysail. Good Job! r.w.landau

Job well done...

This could have turned out pretty bad for the kiddos. I don't think I have ever seen a paddleboat in the ocean! Kids are invincible you know. (so they think)

Proper signal for help

Lucky one of the kids knows how to signal for help and not wave hello. I once chance upon a sailboat drifting into a restricted naval base. The skipper waved at me and I waved back thinking this chap must have been pretty brave testing the accuracy of the naval gunners. But when I look carefully, he was waving with both arms high and crossing (I learnt from diving lesson that that is signal for help). So I when over and tow him out of the restricted zone. Perhaps all who goes to sea should learn the correct signal for help.
