The first sailor out on Lake Hopatcong this spring is out there right now in a real blow! Considering that there aren't ANY boats in the water, yet, that I can see and all the marinas are still empty, somebody got their boat in the water to sail today. And it is cold and windy. It's only low forties right now and the wind has to be a steady 30 knots with gusts in the forties. What I just saw across the lake at quite a distance looked like maybe a 23' O'Day with probably at least a double reefed main and just a tiny bit of jib out. They were tacking upwind across from Raccoon Island heading for Henderson Cove. Scott, "On Eagles Wings", was that you???!!! The temps were in the teens over night so there is still some ice caked-up on some parts of the breakwater where I was looking from. This is hardcore dedication to sailing as far as I'm concerned and my hat is off (with the sun glimmering off my bald head)!

Hopatcong?

Scott, What was the origin of the lake name? My friend just stated that the lake was probably named after a former Vietcong fighter who had a leg shot off. Seems you should be out there too in your boat!! Peter

Lake

Just a Little info about the lake. Lake is the largest man made lake in N.J. and N.Y. The dam at the State Park is about 30 feet hight thats what make the lake so big.

Not Us

No Scott, that was not us. I was on boat for most of the day, however it was in my driveway. I need a few warm days to finish the brightwork and recoat the bottom paint. It's been to cold to do the things I want to do. I expect to splash around mid April. Will post when we are in. We will have to meet up this season. Be well Scott see you soon.

LAKE HOPATCONG

Hi Scott, Just want to say Hello that that I bet you I am one of the few people on this forum that can pronounce LAKE HOPATGONG Haa Haa I live in Michigan for the past 11 years. But lived in Andover, NJ for 10 prior. I fished Hopatcong every weekend and day off. I always launched at Florianes. I moved to Michigan and sold my Bass Boat and bought a Catalina 27. I sail in Western Lake Erie. Well just wanted to say Hello. Pat

Hi Pat!

Do you miss Andover? That's a nice town and there's a lot of nice country side around there. I imagine that you used to fish for stripers. Two summers ago a guy caught a 30 pound tiger musky and they had a picture of it at Lee's Park. It was hard to believe a fish that size was pulled out of the lake. Bass tournaments fill up the parking lot at Lee's Park almost every other weekend. Pete, that was a good guess ;), but wrong! We'll have to wait until the marina is ready to launch us and it is still to cold for us. Believe it or not, I was amazed to actually see a sail boat out today. You don't normally see anybody out right after the ice thaws except fishermen. The name Hopatcong comes from the Lenni-Lanape Indian tribe and it means lake of many coves. Suds, you are off just a little bit. Lake Hopatcong was a natural lake. In the early 1800's, they built the Morris Canal and to feed water to the canal, they dammed the Musconetcong River just downstream from the lake. It raised the water level by just 12 feet, but it added the whole south end at King's Cove and the Lake Forest section of the lake at the north end became connected to create a much larger lake in surface area. The whole main body of the original lake is just over 50 feet deep now. It is the largest lake by surface area, but Round Valley Reservoir is much larger by volume, since its dams (there are actually 3 dams) are over 100 feet high and the total depth is about 130 feet. There are no natural lakes in NJ that are even close in size. I don't know about man-made lakes in NY but I suspect that there are dammed lakes that are far larger in size. I think that lake up near Saratoga where the Hudson River is dammed is far larger. Scott, we'll be in the water about the same time you are if it warms up any time soon! I haven't had any thoughts of working on the boat, yet. It's been either too cold or too wet so far. The water is really high right now. We'll have to anchor together some time. We frequently anchor on the west side of Raccoon Island, or at our friends house on the west side of Halsey Island. We also anchor in that cove directly across from the Jefferson House.

Look us up

We will be in slip 16 again at the Windless. We usually have the VHF on 16, give us a hail. Would love to raft up. Uncovered the boat yesterday and pulled her out of the hole. It is right in front of my shop now. I will putter around on afternoons as the weather warms up. Be well Scott, see you on the water.

Don't reallyt miss New Jersey

Hi Scott, I don't really miss Andover. Michigan is a pretty nice state. I am in the Detroit area. Once they settle the B.S. with the mayor it will get even better. There is something to say about being on a lake where you can trim you sail and sail almost all day with out changing it unless you want to Good breezes Pat
