a new mental illness?

someone writes an asinine letter to which he receives a professionally written response. He complains more and is followed by still others writing equally fictitious requests, all to someone who presumably has no control over government policy and everyone does so with little or no factual basis. Sounds like SDD - Sailing Deprivation disorder

Don your post is terribly ambiguous. What and who are you talking about?

Much earlier a letter to Australian Customs was sent and a reply received. That has little to do with this discussion.

Allan - thanks for the links telling the truth here.

Enough of those silly emails to Australia eh wot? The law is the law, and that silly ass got what he deserved. Could have been fined a lot more based on his lies. NautiDuck - you figured out this nonsense and called it right.

We expect

the world to obey and adhere to our laws when coming into our country (they have no choice), we should do the same of others regardless if we agree or not with their regulations. If we choose to disagree, we always have to choice to not go.

Allen, Thanks for the transcript. I felt certain that we

were not getting the complete story from the defendant. I think that he would be called a scoff-law in Maryland. He had the means and opportunity to determine the entry requirements and chose to ignore them. This is a brief introduction to the requirements of US customs. http://www.boatmiami.com/US_Customs_Arrivals_Private_Boats.htm

Jimq26 thank you for your insightful contributions to this discussion.

I don't know how we would have managed without you.

we could take a lesson

with all the immigration controversy in this country, the AU government might just have it right. If you're still reading Ross, I was trying to imply that the visceral reaction demonstrated by some was misplaced - is that too vague a politically correct description to be clear?

I am still here and I agree with you. I also thought that

there was a knee jerk reaction in favor of a perceived underdog. Most of the free world is very accomodating of tourists. However no country is willing to be a door mat to arrogant visitors.

And the winner is

From what I read in the customs stuff, you can be fined 5K and they can seize the boat if you violate US immigration policies. Maybe he got off kind of lucky.

I digress

I'd love to meet Ross. It is rare to find someone like him. I think he is a kook. And that same sentiment holds for the others that agree with his statements. Something tells me you use to be in power at some time in your life. It shows, negatively. A friend, Chuck Ayers, won the Pulitzer Prize for his cartoon saying "I don't need facts, I've already made my decision" in reaction to the Ohio Courts saying the four students killed at Kent State deserved it. Two of the students were straight A students, one on her way to tutor someone, and both were hundreds of YARDS away from the action. My guess is Ross and the others would have applauded that too. The reality is I would not want to meet Ross, or most of you for that matter. I don't agree with your position on this at all and find it repulsive.

Letterman , Thank you for sharing that.

It would seem that people who don't look at the world as you do are in some way defective. I remember very well the massacre at Kent State. That was a tragedy of the first order and for you to presume my feelings and response to it demonstrates the degree of intolerance that you feel for the rest of your fellow Americans. I can well understand why you have difficulty fitting in with the rest of society. As to your interest in making my acquaintance I can assure you the the feelings are mutual.

Let's Take A Deep Breath Here...

My purpose in posting wasn't to start a war or personal affronts. Rather, just to share some boating information appearing in the local press with a pretty outlandish title. I think we are adult enough to realize two things: what we get in two-bit news segments isn't always the whole story, and sometimes organizations of all types do really stupid things even in pursuit of admirable goals. Hopefully, we get the rest of the story to ponder even if we have to dig for it and hopefully the organization figures how stupid it looks and changes eventually. Rick D.

RickD don't be put off by some of the firey exchanges here

Several of us did go in search of the details and the larger picture. I believe that we finally did get a clear picture of the incident. Everyone can form their own conclusions after an objective reading of the posted replies and of the links. I would not hesitate to sail to Australia If that was on my agenda. The response that I received to my hypothetical voyage was that I would be welcome if I did not arrive on their shores unannounced.
