add a second forestay to a Mac 25? I'm thinking of adding one so if the first one broke I would have a backup. The backstay can come undone and the mast would still stand, same for the shrouds. What does everyone think? I already have an extra stay that fits perfect. Thanks, Mac

Why

would the first one break? Why not just inspect the one that is installed with each trip and change out when you see some wear and tear?

First off..there usually isnt a whole lot of load pulling the mast backwards. most forestay breakage has to do with improper maintenance. In fact, just like we pre-cut mainsails for mast bend, you precut a jib to take into account the forestay sag while underway! In any case, most boats have an extra halyard/topping lift/something that you could use in an emergency as a stay. Also, a hoisted jib (non-roller-furling) is a secondary forestay as well. Now if it was a "blue-water boat"...hahahah

Nope. You could drive yourself crazy trying to second guess what is going to fail. If you added a second forestay, why not add duplicates of the others, and a second/third engine, spare radio, spare sails, and on and on. As mentioned, inspect the one you have, if it is okay, you are all set.

It could cause other problems

I'm not sure of your arrangements, but a second stay could cause some problems like fraying of you halyard and fraying of your jib. Like I said, I dont know how you are going to arrange this, but it would take some inspecting after your done. Tony B

broken forestay

I was racing an Olson 30 when the forestay broke while beating to weather. The genoa luff was sufficient to hold the mast up. We immediately did a 180 degree turn, which meant that the wind pressure on the main was holding the mast up, which gave us time to run the spinnaker halyard to the bow and tension it, so that it would act as a new forestay. We retired from the race, at that point, happy to have discovered that you can snap a forestay without losing the stick. In other words, forget about a second forestay. Instead, get yourself a spinnaker halyard (if you don't already have one.)
