I've located a '75 Cat 27 for what I consider a very good deal. What have been your experiences on a Cat 27? Good or bad. My wife and I have 3 small kids. Performance insight would be great as well as maintenance issues. Thanks

The 27 is a good boat for a couple, but for a family you will out grow it real fast. Trust me, if all you kids go out soon as the newness wears off you will be leaft with to small a boat. Look at the older Catalina or Newport 30's. They have twice as much room and are a lot more fun and safe to sail. You will like the boat much longer. Prices should not be much different if you look at a little old 30. Good luck Bob

Cat 27

I guess whether your boat is going to be too small is based on your plans and your experience. For daysailing and overnights in bays and lakes I think it would be okay. I think you have to go into this venture with the idea that in a few years you will outgrow it. The 27 is an excellent boatand you will have a lot of fun and is a great boat to learn on. If your not in too much of a hurry look around for an older 30

Charlie & Bob are right

It may be a great boat to start with but eventually you will want to move up to a 30. If it's a screaming deal, snap it up, use her a lot, then sell her for a profit when you're ready. Charlie's advice of looking around for a deal on a C30 is sound, if it's in your budget. The price difference between 30s & 27s are definitely significant. Have fun! LaDonna

3 Kids...

The 27 may prove too small - depending on ages of the children a 46 may prove too small - but a friend is trying to sell her C30 - she's bought a Gulfstar 43 - so she might be in a mood to deal. She can be reached at "lfowler@valottery.state.va.us" As for the 27, we loved ours and had a great time sailing the boat, and a small boat is better than no boat.

Go for it!!

We cruise and race our C27 (traditional layout) with a crew of 4, myself, my wife and 2 teenagers (1 boy, 1 girl). With a little organization overniters and weekends are very comfortable. Our sailing club has a couple with 3 small children that manage just fine in a C22. With a little ingenuity anything is possible. E.G.
