hello:

I would like to convert the bunks in the main cabin of our Mirage 25 into a big bed. We have a bunk on each side, one pulls out to a 3/4 size. I thought about putting slats across and making a big bunk. We would sleep sideways in the boat. It would be a temporary bunk--one we would make up every night. Has anyone done this?

thanks for any suggestions

Re: Would like to convert 2 main cabin bunks into a queen si

The wing-keel Hunter 23 came from the factory with the pieces needed to convert the bunks to a queen-size berth. The two floorboards in the main cabin fit in vertical slots in the lower bunk facing. The cushioned seatbacks had a plywood backing and hooked over the long fiddles of the cabin side shelves. To make up the berth, the floorboards were simply picked up and dropped into the slots and the cushioned seatbacks were placed across the tops of (now vertical) floorboards. The conversion to or from queen-size could be done in under a minute either way, with no extra parts and nothing out of place in the cabin.

I had pictures of the cabin but I can't find them. I'm sure you can find some in the owners photos of the H23 here at sailboatowners.com. Good luck.

I had a friend with a Catalina 30 who did this and he was happy with the results. To me, it is more trouble than it is worth. i don't want to have to go through all that every night and every morning-but to my friend it was worth it.

The C25 guys do that all the time. I did it on our C22.

Be creative, it'll work just great.

PS - if you can't get your cushions to fit well, consider an air mattress.

Re: Would like to convert 2 main cabin bunks into a queen si

I use a good quality inflatable Intex full size bed. It will span open spaces and distributes the weight so it does not sag. I lower the table in the main cabin and lay out the inflatable. In the morning I just deflate. The motor deflates it in a couple minutes. I roll the sheets in with the bed and stow it. I am just a comfortable in the boat as I am at home.

I have not tried to sleep out in the cockpit yet. I am kind of afraid I will roll over and out of the boat.

Slept in the boat last night so I could meet up with other sailors for a club breakfast before the regatta. Now I wish I had taken some pictures. The only drawback is the bed takes up all of the main cabin space when inflated.
