Hey Ken

Where in rochester are you? I go to RIT, and I had my H23 in braddocks bay this last summer. I'm on RIT's sailing team, too!(side note: braddocks bay got really shallow by mid-august. I had to dump all my tanks and push my boat across the shoal into the lake to get to a ramp on the genesee!!

Try POR-15

I've used the POR-15 products in automotive restoration projects and they are amazing. They are now marketting the products to the marine industry and I highly recommend them. They have products that etch the metal but you don't need that if you've used a grinder or sandblaster ot get the old paint off. They have a metal prep that leaves a zinc coating and their POR-15 paint is activated by moisture so you don't need to worry about it being suitable for use on a keel. It's almost as hard as ceramic when fully cured. I'm doing a full top-to-bottom paint job on my H-34 and I plan to paint the keel with it. The stuff is difficult for other paint to grip so I think you'll have to use their tie-coat-primer between the POR-15 and your bottom paint. Check their Web site.

its your money

my deep keel h34 looks like that every spring. i use a orbitable sander with 60 grit paper, and grind most of the rust off, prime it with rust preventer, and paint it with a non abaltive bottom paint. and it looks great. the keel joint was done 4 yrs ago in the same way, and i filled it in with 5200. its still on rock solid. i never have any leaks, and the bolts seem to be tight. after 23 years maybe a few ounces were lost to oxidation. i can sleep on that. ive also seen racers spend over 3000$ for somsone to strip, undercoat, epoxy, and paint the whole bottom, and keel every few seasons. its gruelling, and dangerous work with all the chemicals, and debris you can come in contact with. it seems to me both ways look great going into the water, and horrible coming out. barnucles can not tell the difference! ive also skipped that iron keel on a 6' boulder at 5 knots, and i still cant find the dent. if that was lead it would be bent, and missing about 50 lbs. iron is good to me. i think ill keep it for another 24 yrs.

Talking about keel joints

My H33.5 had maintenance on the keel joint by the P.O. What appears to be come sort of tape covers the whole joint. It is very stiff, and this haul-out I noticed a little rust on a few edges. I have also had leaks from the keel into the bilge area. Tightening the keel bolts while it was in the water helped, but not 100%.I think that I should try to remove this covering and give that joint a good inspection. Would you fill any voids with 5200? Then what? Sorry to be off the original topic.

WEST MARINE HAS A FIBERGLASS FILLER BUY A QUART OR TWO SAND THE RUST SPOTS THEN USE THE FILLER IT IS LIKE BONDO ONLY WITH FIBERGLASS LET HARDEN SAND AND PAINT DID MY 83 HUNTER 34 FOUR YEARS AGO AND IT STILL LOOKS GREAT

Needle scaler

A great hint Jerry- any comments on best type/make of needle scaler for this job. Where did you rent?Thanks- I have been thinking of getting mine sand blasted but the weather windows are so tight in this climate of ours and making that much mess when others are doing spring anti fouling and cleaning might make a bunch of bad friends in the yard.

Needle Scaler for Keel Prep

Ingersoll Rand makes a good needle scaler and they run from about $150 to $400. However, most local equipment rental places will carry them. Make sure they provide you with new needles when you pick it up and don't skimp on the air, make sure you can maintain the full PSI and CFM during use. Also recommend ear plugs, face shield, dust mask and coveralls. Like I said, much less mess and dust than grinding and definately less than blasting (your neighbors and marina will appreciate this)! I rented both from Stephensons Rental in the "Shwa"
