I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
I am starting to think about the season coming up. I need to sand some of my wood and re coat it. How do you sand the areas inside treaded wood? I am trying to describe the long parallel indentions on some of the boards (Like steps)

Any input is much appreciated!

I shall presume that you are talking about grouves in the treads, a little wider than deep. I take a thin board and round one edge and wrap the sand paper around it and work by hand. Mostly you are trying to get it cleaned and a bit scuffed so the new finish will make a good bond. Don't forget to dust everything with a tack cloth.

Do I have to totally strip the wood if I am going from Cetol to Varnish. I had Cetol light on it/

Varnish get's it's color from penetration.

If there is any residule cetol, the varnish will not penetrate and the color will be different.

I find that a chisel or round metal rod of correct diameter to be the ideal tool to remove old finish from these places. A scraper works great on square edge groove. Just use the tool like a scraper. Sanding should not be necessary if the groove is narrow

Landau is correct, the finish will have a different color wherever you leave the old finish.

For a square groove, grind a hacksaw blade to fit the groove. Do not let the blade get hot while grinding. Grind all three edges with the wheel turning in the same direction against the blade, try to grind the edges square to the flat of the blade. Do not remove the 'curl' of metal left by the wheel, that is the cutting edge and the side that should be facing you as you pull the blade through the groove. Slit a dowel for a handle and use friction tape to hold it in. Pull the blade broadside through the groove with the handle angled slightly toward you.

Same process will work for round or vee grooves but much more care is required for both grinding and for scraping to get an even finish.

If You Get Some Automotive Disk Sand Paper 220 Grit. And Wrap It Around A Garden Hose You Have The Perfect Solution With Some Elbow Grease. You Can Get Smaller Hoses Also, I Have Found Flexable The Best For Groves.
