I would like to remove all the woodwork from the exterior of my Hunter 30 to refinish them in my shop at home. I'm wondering if the handrails, side trim, and winch boards are secured with bolts or screws. I would suspect the handrails to be held by bolts and makes me think if I unscrew them (after removing the wood plugs)a nut and possible washer will fall between the cabintop and ceiling of the cabin - I don't see these inside the boat on the ceiling and guess they are between the layers unless they use screws. Ultimately, my main question is can I remove these and still be able to screw them back in after I'm done.

Grabrails pulled last year

It's a fairly simple procedure to pull the grabrails: drill a pilot hole in the plugs, screw a drywall screw into this pilot hole until it bottoms on the mounting screw. This will back out the plug w/ minimal or no damage to the grab rail. These rails are mounted with wood screws and not nuts and screws, at least on this 1986 model. Once off, I gooped Boatcaulk (?) over the exposed holes, knowing they'd be re-sealed when the rails were installed in the spring. I can say they looked great...for 4 months. The double whammy of UV and other environamental effects took a bit of a toll, even with 4 coats of Sikkens. Can't speak to the other components you referenced. Good luck.

Thanks!

Thanks for the info. My biggest concern was knowing if the grabrails used screws or bolts. My Hunter is a 1982. I'll also try the drywall screw idea. Thanks for the tip. Lee
